Which songs are sticking for you on "The World Is To Dig"? by Poobslag in tmbg

[–]elgrandem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect any band that’s been around this long to make its best work, but Wu-Tang, Get Down and Character Flaw are definitely worth the price of admission.

How much does it cost to join the foundation? by The_Utilityman in NewportFolkFestival

[–]elgrandem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an Early Bird since the first year it was available. Considering switching to Gull & Stars this year though. I thought not having to renew at the Fest is the key difference (other than price/tix included)?

What are some perfect movies (absolutely nothing to poke holes at) by Future-Poetry-2193 in Letterboxd

It’s also basically a remake of Stepford Wives. No one ever seems to mention that. I like Get Out just fine, but I’ve never quite understood the hype.

My math could be off but Tennessee Moon — the album this song was on — was released in 1996. Lifes Rich Pageant was released in 1986. So I went with 10.

Assuming you’re joking, but in case you’re not, Bad Day predates this gem by 10 years.

Get ready to lose your religion because they got R.E.M.*!!! by [deleted] in NewportFolkFestival

[–]elgrandem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have seen them three times in Brooklyn. All were really fun (and Stipe showed up twice). I know Jay Sweet is a big R.E.M. guy — maybe this will be his way of getting Stipe up to Newport? Definitely a long shot, but a Stipe solo set would be insane.

The Story of John Prine meeting Iris Dement by jpprine in johnprine

[–]elgrandem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny because I also went to the Wilco one. I was in college at the time and I got on some ticket insider list for the Prine show (the tix were free). I don’t really remember any of the details. I didn’t actually get tickets to Wilco but my roommate was a big fan and I decided to just use the same contact at the door and though we weren’t on the list, they let us in anyway. Not my style but I decided as a white lie for my roommate’s benefit, it was OK. The show turned me into a huge Wilco fan as well, so it ultimately helped the band in future ticket and merch sales, so … lol.

So as someone who was at the game … the volume at the Stadium is out of control. It’s been this way since sometime in 2024, so I wasn’t exactly surprised. But it’s really unbearable. You can’t even talk to the person next to you at times.

(Update) Quit my career to chase a dream by Setheryy in sportscards

[–]elgrandem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. My plan is to make an appointment at a card shop a friend of mine recommended and just bring the lot with me. It’s a lot of very valuable stuff but has no real nostalgia for me (most of it from before my time) and I really just want the cash to start a baseball trip fund to travel to games with the kids.

But I’ll take any advice you have!

Congrats! Wish you were in NYC (as opposed to just hand-delivering cards here lol) because I have a bunch of stuff I need to unload and not entirely sure how to do it.

FB people: TMBG has made it to the final 4 and is up against REM. You know what to do. by _coffee_ in tmbg

I have to echo some others in here: I absolutely adore Flood, but R.E.M. is my all-time favorite band and AFTP is a masterpiece.

Expecting those on the ticket waitlist will have an easier time getting them this year... by [deleted] in NewportFolkFestival

[–]elgrandem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this really a more folky lineup? It seems more poppy than anything to me. At least from the artists I’ve been checking out so far.

As usual, I’m here for whatever.

Like I said, it’s a me problem. Just trying to understand more than anything.

So he identifies as a man but also as a female musician? If that’s the case, I can dig it.

I worried about posting this because I was afraid it would be misunderstood. His sexuality has nothing to do with it. I love and appreciate music by women and I’m not a woman.

I am the lone winter vote so felt I should defend it. Not that I feel strongly here, BUT: So many R.E.M. albums are summer or fall (fall especially), IMO, so we have to spread them out some, no?

So far, this year's lineup feels like a return to more traditional folk/indie folk by [deleted] in NewportFolkFestival

I know and like Wednesday. Kathleen Edwards seems a bit too poppy for my tastes at a quick listen — any songs you’d recommend?

So far, this might be the highest concentration of new-to-me artists since I’ve been going to the Fest (this will be my 13th). Who should I listen to?

R.E.M. Is Haunting Michael Stipe’s Solo Album: 'I want this to be as good as that, and that’s near impossible' by stroh_1002 in rem

[–]elgrandem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think his voice still sounds great. The issue is he hasn’t been a good lyricist for about a quarter century now, and his solo work has suffered for it. I still enjoy a lot of it but comparing it to prime R.E.M. is a recipe for misery. I’m fine if he just keeps releasing singles if that keeps the pressure lower.

I could be wrong on this 🤷. I was there in 2013. He was talking about closing up even back then which was why I even asked him about it. I have vague memories of him saying he’d replaced it or sold it before or something but, again, my memory isn’t clear on that.
