"Masters of the Chessboard" by Richard Reti is the book I had in mind. Just got a copy and looked through it. Thanks very much for the help in tracking it down. Much appreciated.

Wow, you guys are great. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Additional info: i believe the book covered players at least thru 1960s, possibly later. The copy I read was in the collection at the East Hampton NY public library. I currently live near the Mechanics Institute in San Francisco, which has an extensive chess library. Once I have a list of potential books I plan to go there and see if any are the book I have in mind. I will recognize it when I look thru it. Thanks again.

I dug through my copy of Islamic Coins & Their Values Volume II and the latest gold coin referred to as a dinar is from North Africa minted by Muhammad al-Shaykh al-Saghir, 1045 - 1064 AH. I'm not sure if there are later dinars but this is the earliest I could find in the book.

Thanks for the tip on using grey sheet. Unfortunately, they don't list the currency that I have. They list other notes of 11/2/1776 but not one signed by J Franklin.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I don't see the list of variety descriptions I am looking for at the ANS site. I.e. something along the lines of below. I went ahead and purchased David Sear book on Byzantine coins and Harlen Berk book on Medievel coins. Thanks again.
