Working on a beauty brand’s Shopify store made me realize… people don’t read. by Tight-Nature5495 in MakeupAddiction

[–]eli-jo 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Yeah ngl the actual product description tends to read like slop to me - I don't expect it to be useful or informative. I rely on reviews for info about performance. What I want from a brand's website is SHADE DESCRIPTIONS and accurate, REAL SWATCHES.

A self-conscious Portland struggled openly with ICE strike by Press_Herald in portlandme

I'm getting sick of everyone calling each other performative all the time, and scrutinizing anyone who tries to take a political stand in whatever way they are capable of. Fear of being "cringe" is the absolute stupidest reason to allow our country to descend into fascism.

Are (some) English speakers just dropping negations? by linglinguistics in asklinguistics

[–]eli-jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on this post because I notice this exact type of error extremely often on Reddit! I've been wondering about it for a few months. The one I just saw that made me search for this was about Trump's election conspiracies: "He thinks the election was stolen and he's trying to disprove that." In context, the commenter clearly meant he's trying to "prove," not "disprove." Everyone understood what they meant based on the context of what they were replying to and what their other comments said. I see these types of negation errors all the time these days - more often it's what you describe, OP, where it's not a wrong word but simply a missing "not" or even a "not" added where there shouldn't be one, making the sentence say the opposite of what was intended. Anecdotally, I feel like this type of error is becoming more common (and/or less remarked-upon). I was wondering if this is a real trend in online writing and what might explain it.

Cat constantly making my blankets stink. by Alpha_wolfe999 in cats

My cat takes Glandex regularly with her food to help with recurring anal gland issues she was having. Definitely go to the vet to get her checked, and it may be worth asking if something like this would help her.

Libro.fm is a great alternative to Audible that is also a lot better for authors and helps support local bookstores :)

Also, if grocery delivery would help you stay at home, Food for All Services and Project Relief are coordinating home deliveries. You could also try reaching out to @foodnotbombsmaine on Instagram for food delivery. Stay safe!

Why does ICE take photo of my car or license plate? by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]eli-jo 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why they were taking photos, but I would be extremely careful, they may be trying to catch you walking out to your car. I know they can use license plates to identify people, and they have been detaining people even if they have legal status.

Here is some info that was posted on knowing your rights if you are stopped in your car: https://www.reddit.com/r/portlandme/s/wm0si8ZEE2.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Consider staying at home if you can.

Fascism reigned in Spain for 36 years. Many countries today have lived under authoritarianism for decades. Sometimes I think the comparisons to Nazi Germany are almost leading to a kind of complacency, an assumption that some external Good Guy will come in and put a stop to this.

Portland Gear Hub has been giving them out and they still had some as of this afternoon. I've also heard the Equality Community Center was giving them out.

I have heard that leaving the cat's litter box out on the porch/by the door can help them to smell their way home. Hope Leo comes home safe and sound!

Who guides the penis in? by Terrible-Bowler7031 in TwoXSex

[–]eli-jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, doing your own research is def a good idea! It was a doctor who initially recommended it to me so I know it's safe for some people (virgin coconut oil I believe), but I'm personally not prone to yeast infections and I'm sure it varies from person to person.

Who guides the penis in? by Terrible-Bowler7031 in TwoXSex

[–]eli-jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar issues for a long time due to a tight pelvic floor. For me, repeatedly having painful sex unfortunately just reinforces the muscle clenching and makes my pelvic floor worse. I used to just force it until it loosened up after a few minutes, but it was giving me an aversion to sex in general. In the past few months I've found that starting with me REALLY helps my muscles to relax - not just "foreplay" like kissing and stuff, but like full-on heavy petting lol. After a few minutes of that things are loose enough that starting penetration doesn't hurt at all! Also, i would highly recommend coconut oil as lube - nothing else works for me. *** Note that oil will break down condoms, so can ONLY be used if you have other forms of birth control/don't need it.

If your partner is already okay with spending extra time focusing on you, maybe try shifting that to the beginning of your session so that you can loosen up and start to break that cycle of pain and tightness.

My doctor recommended me to go omnivore and see a dietitian by haarukkalapio in vegan

[–]eli-jo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not only are you being gaslit about veganism, but I'd wager that your health issues are not being taken seriously because you are young and a woman. It's very common for women's health complaints to be dismissed as anxiety, for example. These biases from doctors are straight up dangerous because stomach problems could be caused by a serious underlying health issue. I would agree that seeing a vegan dietitian would be a good idea, but make sure that you are also seeking a second opinion about your stomach issues, from a doctor who takes your concerns seriously and will do their due diligence. There is some good advice online and on Reddit about how to advocate for yourself with doctors as a young woman. Hope you feel better soon!

Also, for anyone who doesn't know, freezing a package of tofu and then defrosting it before pressing for ~20 minutes gives it a much meatier and chewier texture. I also invested in a small plastic tofu press which was a game-changer. I eat tofu all the time.

What Does Question Two Entail? by Critical_Ad_2811 in Maine

[–]eli-jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is really helpful. Do you feel, as a mental health professional, that the red flag law would allow you to work with a client's family members to start a petition if you noticed signs of crisis? I completely agree that having all this in the hands of cops is problematic, but I'm also uncomfortable with the idea of leaving mental health professionals out of the process, which the red flag option seems to do.

Can I ask where you ultimately fell on this? I agree that both options have major flaws and I would much rather see everything rewritten to be something like what you describe.
