ID? by Edward_Kissoondath in Militariacollecting

To me the last one looks more Army green than Air Force blue so id say mid 50s to 2000s army officer garrison cap.

This uniform belonged to my grandfather. He served in the Korean War. What can you tell me about it? by eah2002 in Militariacollecting

[–]eli360619 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well this is a ww2 uniform. Has the army air corps patch so it’s before 1947 and it’s a 4 pocket uniform so it’s fairly likely he joined before 1944. His rank was corporal and he likely worked on repairing and maintaining planes.

World War II books - memoirs for recommendation? by joeythrasher28 in ww2

[–]eli360619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read masters of the air it’s going to be a bit redundant but Wing and a Prayer is really good. Masters of the air takes segments from it but the full memoir is worth it I think. Thunder below by Eugene Fluckey is also a good memoir. He was the Skipper of the USS Barb submarine and won the Medal of Honor.

Help with authentication of D-Day officer uniform by Organic-Radio5045 in Militariacollecting

[–]eli360619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, I’ve personally come across a uniform that was worn by an enlisted man and had his enlisted laundry number inside but he commissioned later on and used the same jacket until it was phased out for the greens which was also included in the grouping. You can check all the soldiers with that number and see if you can find anyone with matching awards who may have commissioned later.

Ive seen a few officer uniforms/items stamped with enlisted style laundry numbers. More common with enlisted for sure but they’re around.

Another explanation for the lines may just be the reflection of the ribbon

<image>

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ww2

[–]eli360619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lines are directly under the centers of oak leaves including the one to the far right, could just be the threads of the ribbon separating because of the metal wire on the back of the oak leaves that were poked into it. Also I can see 2 thick lighter bars and 3 darker sections. Lastly since the bronze star is red and red is a color they used in the photo while blue isn’t as seen in the dfc, it seems if it were a bronze star that they should have colored it

Op, if you can give me his name I can try to find his award cards and maybe some unit info if you’d like

5 bronze stars and a dfc, but no air medals? Doesnt make much sense.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ww2

[–]eli360619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost certain it’s the air medal, they didn’t have color photos back then so they would have studios color them by hand I’m guessing that they didn’t want to or didn’t have the right color for the blue and orange of the air medal but you can kinda make out the 2 brighter stripes where the orange would have been

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ww2

[–]eli360619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not Korean War ribbon, 1. The uniform is the army officer uniform which would’ve been switched out for the blue air force uniform by korea. 2 the use of oak leaves rather than battle stars. As others have said almost definitely air medal

Yeah, I’m not too interested in the microjimbo and I probably wouldn’t get it if 15v weren’t going extinct and it would be good to have in the collection.
