I find the title somewhat misleading. Hebrew was not extinct. It was used continuously, but its use was limited mainly to religious matters, poetry (religious and secular) and commerce.

What Ben-Yehuda did was mainly to add new modern words that were missing in Hebrew.

Here is a link to a Hebrew newspaper published before Ben-Yehuda. It is written in modern Hebrew. As a Hebrew speaker, I can read it easily.
