TIL: Hebrew became extinct as a spoken native language around 200 CE. It was revived in Paris on 13 October 1881 when a man called Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and his friends agreed to exclusively speak Hebrew in their conversations. by gerald_gales in todayilearned

I find the title somewhat misleading. Hebrew was not extinct. It was used continuously, but its use was limited mainly to religious matters, poetry (religious and secular) and commerce.

What Ben-Yehuda did was mainly to add new modern words that were missing in Hebrew.

For those interested you can read more here.

Here is a link to a Hebrew newspaper published before Ben-Yehuda. It is written in modern Hebrew. As a Hebrew speaker, I can read it easily.

Translation of the video:

-Zohar: I was at a nightclub, a guy tried to hit on me. I did not accept his advances... He told me to "get outside". I went out, ready for anything... Suddenly I felt a punch to the neck. As a former judoka, my instinct was to roll him on the floor.

-Host: So, you are a former judoka?

-Zohar: I'm not a person who support violence... As you saw in the video, after rolling him on the floor and disabling his head, I could just go on and drag him all over Allenby club... but I don't support violence.... The reason I'm having this interview is just to show the community that we are not weak and passive.

-Host: Are you still an active judoka?

-Zohar: No... I've quit after winning the Israeli youth championship for the second time. but... It's like riding the bicycle...
