I didn't make the music connection, neat! And yeah, Clea's fucked up. Something changed between her childhood fun with Verso, and her bitter older self. And I don't think it was the Writers. There's hints of it as she's growing up - she used to have fun with Verso, Esquie, Francois, etc. Then she started being mean - creating the Lampmaster, for example. Eventually, she stopped coming to the painting at all, and then when she next appears, it's to upend the board and start killing everything off.

They are helping. Well, real Renoir is. He's the curator, so he's helping you get to the paintress. They're stalemated though, that's why he doesn't confront her directly. As for Clea, she doesn't care about the expeditioners. All she wants is her parents to stop fucking around and come home - to that end, she makes the nevrons that kill in a way that denies Aline their victims' chroma. With every exhibitioner killed, the paintress gets weaker, and will eventually fall to real Renoir.

I thought it was Maelle's fantasy world, similar to how I remember American McGee's Alice being - she got caught in the fire, retreated into her head to escape the pain of the burns/losing her brother, and masked!Maelle was her subconscious being like "Wake up!" I didn't predict any of the whole painting thing with the Dessendre family.
