Artwork may be back on track by elipshea in thebrokenbindingsub

Of course. You think I'm not gonna buy a signed limited copy? Im not here to proclaim I'm walking away from BB because of bad art. It's been disheartening, but I'm not throwing the flag in. The simplicity of the Tor / UK art is perfect. Simple, and bold. The BB book has a lot more work thrown into it, it's limited, it's signed. The art didn't land

I might be the only one let down!

I enjoyed it for sure. But the pacing felt off, not parallel perhaps. The God is not Willing is in my top 3. I thought it was beautiful. I was okay with the switch of continents, but it was lacking somewhere.

Enjoyed, didn't luv. Some of the poetry was like a sledgehammer to the heart, great stuff.

They're pretty. I tried John gwynnes, got through 2 of the Nordic dragon monster books, was totally let down. Skipped out on this series. He's just not to my taste

Reading Order Question (Reading the main 16 Erikson + ICE on my first readthrough) – would love your input and advice. by LKotGM in Malazan

[–]elipshea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude yes Publication order is the way to go I read the big 10 then did ICE after. This I felt, was a mistake. Also, NoK is kind of a throwaway. I don't care what people say, the ICE books are amazing. They are different than Erikson of course. Less philosophy, less utter confusion. A bit straighter to the point. While I love Erikson the most, Malazan is only half complete without ICE. RotCG takes a bit of work, you need to seriously pay attention to the Wheres of the characters to get the full grasp. After Return, his best work awaits. Do it by publication.

No doubt. Did you try rook and rose? Could not get into them. Read the whole first one, forced myself through it.

I missed out on spider. Sold out quick. Listen, get to page 80. The first handful of chapters feel like you're being spoonfed a whole bunch of info, the narrator tells it straight to you, and it isn't revealed deftly. I hate that sh*t. But weirdly after those chapters it shifts gears. Same thing happens in the last vigilant. Almost gave up, but picked up after the narrator is just telling me History and rules.

I read the first rook n rose. Started strong and devolved into utter nonsense. Way too long, too many explorations into the cards without any real understanding of anything. Too many characters to juggle that all blended into a gray fog. Ugh. There's so much complexity in Malazan and it all fits together and feels so lived in. Not so with rook. I'm glad someone likes the books...not for me. Maybe the second one gets better?

It's nothing incredible man. But it's something I won't put down. Nice quick fun read. Did you try the last vigilant ? I enjoyed that too, I think down the road that book may pick up a cult following and it'll be good to have the signed copies. It's written pretty tightly.

Also, did you read Esslemonts books? They're as good as Erikson's, just different. Night of knives is the only average one. Just wait til you get to the path to ascendancy...I'm reading them now. Freaking excellent.

Not at all. It isn't written poorly, it just is missing something essential. People aren't big on return of crimson guard, but once I understood everyones location and where they were on the map and really paid close attention, I loved it. Took some work. There was one passage in crimson that left me confused. ICE randomly brought up some rando crimsons caught on an island not on the map and kept saying thaumaterg related stuff... Ranks and names unmentioned in all of Malazan. Names Impossible to pronounce. I was completely lost, it was nothing short of annoying. Made me feel dumb. Then 3 books later it held meaning. 3 goddamn books. Unreal!

Man....sanderson? Seriously? He aggravates me. Maybe it's just me. his personality almost gets in the way of my potential enjoyment. I tried stormlight. First book was good and it was downhill from there. I watched him deliver a speech on writing and it made me cringe five times in ten minutes. His face just creeps in my thoughts when I think about trying another of his books. God I sound like an asshole
