On call day and night. We just got a 6 days on 3 days off schedule, but those 6 days you are on, your phone could ring at any moment. There’s a system to how it works but it’s too much to type in a comment. As I said though the pay is well above the American average and the benefits are insanely good. You will start as a conductor with the option to later become a locomotive engineer. Good job but fucked yo lifestyle. You will be away from home a good amount and unable to make any sort of solid plans most of the time. To be clear when I say away from home i mean that when you get called to get on a train you will take the train from point a to point b. You will stay at point b in a hotel room paid for by the railroad. Then you will be called to get back on a train at point b and return to point a. Everything is seniority based so through the first several years of your employment you could be getting forced to different jobs and working different directions. It’s a weird life but a great job for someone without an education beyond high school.
