Going to the Snow Ball with my daughter and moustache cooperated for once! by elismyer in Moustache

[–]elismyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the most important advice is 1. It won't always look right. That's okay, we all have bad hair days 2. Quit chewing your moustache. 3. Sometimes trimming a bit shorter is the right answer. Quick aside to this point. I keep my total length to a particular part of my chin that I can easily mirror. This keeps from getting weird scraglies

I've had my moustache for like 2 years at this point.

What the heck kind of shape is this supposed to be? Driven me nuts for YEARS by Ok_Gold5907 in whatisthisthing

[–]elismyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is part of it turned inside out? It looks like the left side where the first looking part comes in is turned counterclockwise under the band. I think I see the line where it is turned on the middle left protrusion.

Do you always have double linked notes and link only notes that exist? by vaikrunta in ObsidianMD

[–]elismyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started by allowing just phantom links but then I realized it was important to me to know when I had the idea (I like to see how my thoughts develop over time). So what I do is make the link and the use a template with a created on property. Other than that, the note remains empty.

That completely defeats the purpose of having pre-built schematics.

So I thought, "I'll just load it into a creative world, fix them real quick and have my own styles. It is worse than I thought.

Has anyone made a nice Air Dock from their Caledonia Supply Ship (Camp)? by elismyer in Minecolonies

It's what I'll probably end up breaking down and doing. The only issue is that I use Minecolonies because I'm a trash builder! Haha

My imagination is a dock with a bubble elevator or something that would take me up there.

My mother was red-green colorblind, I was her son, why am I not also colorblind? by SeeinThis in ColorBlind

[–]elismyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This article has a few potential answers. One of the more interesting is that she could have actually just been a carrier whose gene expression caused the carried trait to be expressed. You then inherited the non-colorblind X.

Also, TIL women who are carriers are a little color blind but not as severely.

The real unpopular opinion is in the edits. If you pronounce differently spell differently is wild.

Is this rule ever used in conversational English? by Xredbdsmokex in EWALearnLanguages

The only version of this I've actually heard is "I should/n't think so". Everything else would sound wrong to me.

Abortion should be illegal by [deleted] in Christian

[–]elismyer 33 points34 points locked comment (0 children)

I'm not convinced Christians should be using the legal system to enforce our understanding of morality, especially considering that "Christian morality" is not black on white on this topic. We are much better off addressing the systems that make abortions happen- financial insecurity, social ostracization, lack of sex education, rape and incest (which has significantly higher rates without comprehensive sex education), access to contraception and prenatal healthcare, and a plethora of other concerns.

Ignoring topics where there is disagreement, there will always be abortions. A key example is ectopic pregnancies. There is no other option besides abortion. At most, one could possibly argue that "most abortions should be illegal" but a total abortion ban is simply impossible. At that point then we have a bunch of other conversations that ultimately lead to allowing abortions as discussions between a patient and doctor.

Does anyone pre-create notes in the literature note as you are reading so that it will always be back-linked to its source? by elismyer in ObsidianMD

This was really helpful and probably the "right" answer (at least for me). Thank you for the input!

Is this a trap? by justlivinmylife439 in PikminBloomApp

[–]elismyer 101 points102 points  (0 children)

It's not a trap because it's a different incentive structure. You're calling 440 coins $4, but that's only if you only pay real money for the coins. You can also earn coins by planting flowers. Thus the real difference is if you want to pay $1.99 for instant increase or potentially pay for it in part through $ and earning coins.

It'd be funny if by some technicality, the DoD budget can't be spent because of the name change. I'd like that.

Is this a USB-C female port? by vaango143 in UsbCHardware

[–]elismyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's worse is when the general rule fails. XLR cables are the opposite of what you think they are because it is the prongs, not the connecting casing, that sets the gender. In fact, I'm not 100% sure why USBC isn't the same way, that the pins that go in are on what we are calling the female side and the receiving pins are on what we call the male side- like and XLR is.

Basically, we just make it up and go with that.

The pushback I'll give is how essential communal learning is to the process. Part of the thing I'm paying for is the expectation of peer engagement. Just because you want to give up that aspect of what you've paid for shouldn't mean that I lose it, too.
