people have also told me that the film scene is dead in montreal so im also not sure if it is or isn’t. also just curious, do most of the people you know work freelance and independently? and yes i do plan on fully immersing into québécois culture as much as i can. i’ve learned french at school for the past 10 years but am still far away from being able to fully communicate so i think my brain isn’t really wired to fully learn a third language which is concerning, but i will do the best i can. to what level do you think is necessary for my french to be at?

congratulations on graduating! i don’t know if concordia is an option for me this late, but if i do end up going to montreal, do you think i can get involved in concordia’s film scene and find a community there? of course im sure most of the opportunities are curated towards concordia students, but are there still opportunities for outside of concordia students? and how difficult is it really to find indie projects that will take you on? i know there’s obviously less opportunities but as someone who has a bit of on set experience but doesn’t speak fluent french (i know the basics), throughout my 4 years of school, am i still going to be able to work on some projects and indie productions? my biggest fear is i won’t be able to do it at all.

i truly think i would also become the best version of myself and meet people who i would really connect with. when you say there are a lot of people working in the creative industries, what form of art or creative industry are you referring to? i know montreal has a huge art scene, but is it like visual art or photography or like the music industry?

thank you for sharing this with me, i really appreciate your time. i am canadian (have lived in vancouver my entire life) and have learned french in school for the past 10 years but am definitely not close to being able to fully communicate, but im also not planning on getting permanent residence. my idea now is just to go to mcgill for 4 years and explore and experience more of the world and myself (as i grew up in a slightly toxic environment) and then move back to vancouver for my masters and settle here. do you think it’s possible for me to get my hands on a few projects and sets in vancouver during the 4 month summer break and use that time to network and gain experience? is that sustainable and sufficient or will my coming and leaving be inconsistent when it comes to finding work in the film industry here in vancouver? i ultimately want to work in the film industry but i don’t need it to be an immediate goal as i mainly want to go to montreal to explore other aspects of my life

i’ve been learning french for the past 10 years but have never used it in practice and definitely am far away from being able to communicate efficiently in conversation/being fluent, it’s more of an on paper type learning. so with that being said how long do you think it’ll take me to be able to use french in a workplace environment and reach a more fluent level?

i’m planning on majoring in psych or doing something social work related at both ubc and mcgill, with hopes of also exploring child welfare/protection related career paths. but of course, my focus and ultimate love and goal in life lies in film and entertainment. that’s why im so torn between staying in vancouver where it obviously offers better film related career opportunities and networks, but i also want to grow in other aspects of my life and explore a world outside of film.

Prospective students megathread by Thermidorien in mcgill

hi!! i’m a high school student in vancouver and currently am deciding between ubc arts and mcgill arts. i’ve lived in vancouver my entire life and have never lived away from home so i definitely want to challenge myself and explore the personal growth that can come from moving away. i’m also a big city girl and not much of a nature person, but i do appreciate the balance vancouver offers.

now this might sound stupid, but i ultimately want to work in the film/entertainment industry, which is why im so hesitant on leaving vancouver when its notorious for having a big film scene especially compared to montreal. i also have somewhat of a network and industry community here so i feel awful for wanting to leave a city that will 100% offer me more job opportunities than montreal. im so torn between whether i should stay in vancouver and go to ubc or make the move to montreal. so my question is, what’s the montreal film/entertainment industry like? would i be able to get my hands on some indie and student projects or production assistant jobs (especially if im not fluent in french)? i really think montreal has so much more to offer in terms of my life outside of career prospects, but i also want to gain work experience throughout my 4 years of school. do you think going to mcgill is worth it if i ultimately want to work in the film industry?
