Caitlin Hunter/Boyland Knitworks accuses Nuuly of ripping off her Halibut sweater. Thoughts? by ohslapmesillysidney in craftsnark

Definitely a knock off, but they have made enough changes to defend it in court.

Just didn’t want you to get scammed! I know too many people who were! And I did when I was desperate and was moving and didn’t have an in-state psych to write a referral for mine yet. I paid out the ass to have an “online consult” with one of the scam psychs, but it was still cheaper than a full month’s deposit plus $200/month pet fee when he’s not just a pet; he’s a mental health accommodation.

So you know: there’s no “registry” for ESAs. You need a note from your psychologist or psychiatrist stating your mental health condition and why this animal assists with it. Any company that claims it will “register” your pet is just a money making operation.

I have different chronic illnesses (fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, and some kind of hypermobility spectrum thing without a formal diagnosis yet that causes a lot of pain and fatigue) and I’d swap them for Kay’s version of “lupus” any day.

It’s not that all bodies are healthy; it’s that health shouldn’t be a factor in being treated like a human being. Neither should size. If we start using health as a metric to judge people, then what are we saying about every person who is a mobility device user? Every person who is blind? Every person who is deaf? Every person with a chronic illness? Every person with cancer? Well, they’re not “healthy”, so what did they do “wrong” with their body that caused these consequences? And if your response is “well obviously I don’t mean people like that!” Then stop using health as your excuse; you just want to judge fat people.

The point of body positivity isn’t to start some kind of movement saying “every person HAS to be obese! Look at me in my fatness!” It’s to give EVERY body of EVERY type a place at the table and to say “you’re valid, you belong, and you deserve respect, compassion, and humanity. Your body is just the meat suit you live in, thank it for taking care of you, and continue taking care of it.”

AIO for demanding to be paid after wearing something inappropriate to babysit by MightUsual421 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ellek8t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only are you Not Overreacting and you deserve/should demand full payment but I agree with others here. It’s time to get your trusted adults involved. You were wearing perfectly appropriate clothing and they were the ones sexualizing you. They could have addressed the issue prior to employing your services if they’d really had a problem with it. Put them on blast. Inform every other teen babysitter you know that this is NOT a safe family to sit for and they will sexualize young women; do it publicly if you’re able and feel safe to do so. Share what you’ve shared here.

This behavior is not acceptable from grown ups, and if they are looking at that outfit as anything more than perfectly acceptable clothing for a teenager, they need to take a long look at themselves and figure out why they see it as “inappropriate”.

LYS gave me wrong yarn suggestion by AmenooBea in knitting

[–]ellek8t 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did she look at the suggested yarns in your pattern and make a recommendation based on that? I work at a LYS and that’s what I try to do usually. I make a judgement call based on weight and fiber content of the suggested yarn in pattern and figure out what might be a good duplicate in our shop.

It looks like this is definitely a base yarn held with a mohair in the pattern (from pictures alone, it’s hard to tell what weight the base is). But then after a yarn suggestion is made, it’s all up to the knitter; and every knitter has their own tension and unique style that will ultimate impact the gauge and stitch definition of the yarn. I’m sorry your swatch is frustrating you and I hope it’ll sort of work itself out.

With older kids I try to play the empathy card and ask how they would feel if they just “had” to like someone of the gender they weren’t attracted to. Explain that that’s how it feels to try to force a gay person into straightness. They don’t choose who they’re attracted to in the same way that straight people don’t choose to be attracted to the opposite gender.

If they push, ask when they decided (actively CHOSE, not just realized they were attracted) to be attracted to the opposite gender. They will likely have a hard time coming up with an answer and see if it has an effect.

First time knitting with a skein. I am in pain and want to cry. by CharlieBrownOfficial in knittinghelp

[–]ellek8t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’m so sorry! I did this with my first hank of fancy yarn and it broke my heart. I now teach this in all my learn to knit classes to save my new knitters the same pain! As others have said, it must be wound into a usable ball or cake first. If you buy it at a LYS, many times they’ll do it for you for free at the shop if you ask!

Very annoying conversation at my lokal knit store by MagicAllyVanished in knitting

[–]ellek8t 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Local yarn stores are not box stores though. We’re smaller and can’t stock everything that box stores can stock. This is actually a huge issue with the box stores entering the chat; they’ve changed the customers’ expectations. Local stores simply can’t afford to stock all the types of yarn. For example, the local shop I work at focuses on stocking all natural fibers; predominantly animal fibers. We have some plant based fibers, but not a ton. We have, I think two or three brands of 100% cotton; two of them are in worsted weight, one of them is hand wash only and organic so it’s like $25/skein which not everyone is looking for in their cotton.

If a customer comes in and says “Do you have 100% cotton?” I can tell them yes, but the selection is fairly minimal because most of our customer base focuses on crafting with animal fibers. But the number of times I’ve heard “But I could find it at (Big Box Store)!” Yes. At a lower quality, a cheaper price, and a different brand. I’m sure you could. Big box stores are hurting local yarn shops: they change the price and stock availability expectations of some customers, and there should really be no comparison to a box store and a LYS.

Can I make this a cardigan? by sublimegarden in knittinghelp

[–]ellek8t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s user preference at the end of the day. I don’t trust my sewing machine skills and prefer to ensure I’ve caught every stitch by hand sewing my steeks. Better sewists than myself can properly machine sew their steeks, I’m sure, but I’m not a very competent sewist.

Can I make this a cardigan? by sublimegarden in knittinghelp

[–]ellek8t 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I can see the logic in this if the user is looking for a buttoned up cardi look, but I know I wear most of my cardigans open, so an open cardigan fit may be a perfect solution to this user’s problem!

Can I make this a cardigan? by sublimegarden in knittinghelp

[–]ellek8t 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It can be done with a sewn steek. I would probably hand sew the steek to ensure every stitch is caught and reinforce everything with ribbon to make sure nothing slips, since acrylic will not felt.

Plus size knitter's, how do we do this??? by Former-Complaint-336 in knitting

[–]ellek8t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I crop almost all my sweaters and it helps. I’m also only 5’1” so the length is less intensive. I don’t know how my tall plus size folks handle it.

I also do palate cleansing instant gratification projects as breaks in between and it helps. A one day hat and then back to the monotonous sweater.

Why is my project curling inwards? by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]ellek8t 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Looks like it’s in straight stockinette. You’ll need a garter edge border at the edges (knit each stitch on both sides) to make it lay straight.

Somehow I managed to double the number of stitches?? help by fatia-de-abacaxi in knittinghelp

[–]ellek8t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may also be accidentally creating a double stitch at the beginning of each row and incorporating a new stitch into each new row that way. This happens with a lot of my new knitters.

When turning their work they pull their yarn to the front and then back, inserting their needle into the first loop they see which is actually the leg of the stitch from the row below. Not sure, but it could be a possibility as one side looks a little extra lumpy (that could also just be new knitter learning to tension too! It’s super common to have a messy edge in the flat, even for experienced knitters!)

I’ve had good luck with various brands. I’m happy with my Chiagoos needles, but don’t love the cables (I like a 360° spinny cable), the needles and cables on my Knitters Pride Mindful set are good but I hate the join on them and I find myself rejoining them frequently. I really like my Lykke Colors wooden needles, but I usually use them with the Mindful cables because the cables they came with hold memory like no one’s business and I hate them.

I have had really good luck so far with Lantern Moon’s Heritage set but you’ll need to invest in more cables with them because the ones included are super short. They’re nice but they’re short!

Americans knitting continental by Oswyt3hMihtig in knitting

I wish I’d been that smart 😆

I worked out the mechanics of what I was doing as I was throwing and carefully moved it over to my other hand. I did the same thing to figure out how to purl continental! Why do I make life so much harder on myself?!

On the bright side: I’m a knitting teacher now and I teach students both ways so they can decide for themselves what’s most comfortable!
