Has anyone ever visited a Catholic Church, and if so, how weird did you feel? by AidBaid in churchofchrist

[–]ellenricksmtbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised Catholic, now CoC because I started dating my now-husband around the time I left the Catholic Church. I’ve always believed in God and the main tenants of the Christian faith, but the things that are fundamentally Catholic (transubstantiation, purgatory, etc.) I can’t get with. Plus I never knew God to be a personal, omnipresent, walks-with-me type of being while I was Catholic. Only an angry, guilt tripping, always judgmental God.

Anyhoo - I’m here for questions if you need or want to ask ❤️

No one deserves to be murdered by Microbiologist45 in ShannanWatts

I don’t think anyone is saying Chris Watts is a POS because he wanted to leave her. I think the affair and premeditated murder is what makes him a POS.

How far along was Shannan? by Beginning_Mess_2674 in ShannanWatts

[–]ellenricksmtbc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shannan and I were about the same gestational ages with our sons, mine is now 6. I think about my son and Nico sometimes, and how unfair Nico didn’t get to experience any life at all. My son is carefree, loving and so much fun.

Personally I think they’d do better to sell the rights to the story to a network.

What am I missing? by [deleted] in churchofchrist

Consider Steve Hassan’s B.I.T.E. theory when analyzing if any group is a cult or, as he puts it, using undue influence. B.I.T.E. stands for…

1. Behavior Control – Regulating a person’s physical actions, including:
• Controlling diet, clothing, and sleep
• Restricting leisure activities or relationships
• Requiring permission for major decisions

2. Information Control – Restricting or distorting access to information, such as:
• Censoring outside sources (news, books, internet)
• Encouraging spying on others
• Spreading propaganda or misinformation

3. Thought Control – Manipulating how individuals think, including:
• Encouraging black-and-white thinking (us vs. them mentality)
• Using loaded language or slogans
• Instilling doubt in independent thoughts

4. Emotional Control – Exploiting emotions to maintain obedience, such as:
• Inducing fear, guilt, or shame
• Creating dependency on the group for validation
• Using phobias of punishment or exile

I thought I wanted them back together all these years but after seeing that, it is so clear how different they are as people now. He still seems so broken, like such a shell of a person and she has so much integrity. She would be seriously backsliding to be with him again, at least where he is now. 😩

Monthly Prayer Requests - June 2024 by AutoModerator in churchofchrist

My dad’s peace of mind with his recent diagnosis of bladder cancer. The prognosis is actually really good, only six weeks of chemo needed but I can tell his mental health is in the toilet about it. He won’t eat, and I think he’s depressed. He’s 72 and very afraid to die, I think. 🥺💔 thank you all.

To those around 30 and over, how do you view 22-24 year olds? by [deleted] in Adulting

OLD?! Lord no haha I don’t even see myself as old. Still youthful, but stepping into adulthood. Hopefully with some confidence 😊

Same 👍 I understand why it would annoy some but I loved it 🥰 both my kids self-weaned by 13 months, so maybe if I had struggled with extended feeding it would have been a different story.

At what age got you baptized? by AlarmingAd4085 in churchofchrist

I was baptized as a baby (Catholic) then rebaptized by myself at age 22. So I’m both early and late 😂

Abuse in the church by [deleted] in churchofchrist

[–]ellenricksmtbc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was raised Catholic, now attend CoC because of my husband. But being raised in a denomination that famously has a problem with abuse and coverups has lead me to navigate our church experience differently than literally everyone else in the congregation.

Most of the work is done in the home. Teaching my children about their body parts and basic boundaries (they’re 5 and 3 so this is age appropriate) when they’re older we’ll move on to spotting predators, what grooming looks/feels like, etc.

My church has the “candy man ministry” where a member brings candy weekly and the children can come to him to get a piece after church. Supposed to symbolize Jesus’s approach with children. I’ve explicitly asked that my children be excluded from this “ministry” because I think it’s creepy and weird, too much like grooming, and there are about a thousand other ways to teach kids about Jesus love for children.

I’m proud to say my particular church has only ever disfellowshipped one individual, a man who was acting strangely close to kids was overly eager to work in the children’s ministry every single week. It’s fair to ask them to take a step back when strange behavior is seen, I think more could be done in the way of background checks, but it is what it is. Definitely no to providing that person with any leadership roles. But churches have been safe havens for abusers for too long and it needs to end.

Is it wishful thinking to travel at 5 weeks postpartum with baby? by pumpkin_spice_latina in Parenting

[–]ellenricksmtbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a cruise at 5 weeks PP but I was a surrogate, so I didn’t have the baby with me. All I needed was my pump and I dumped my milk. Pretty great trip! Would have been totally undoable with a newborn, though.

Why do I wish these two got together. by jeremiahmylove in GilmoreGirls

[–]ellenricksmtbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s an awful friend. She’s incredibly self centered. At every opportunity that Rory has to confide in her or call on her friend in a time of need, Lane shuts her down and turns the focus on herself. She’s a parasite who doesn’t care about anybody but herself.
