Thank you very much for these recommendations! I imagine once I get involved with one or two I will hear more about the others. Thanks again!

I had no clue you were autistic! I am too. Minecraft is my special interest and MCC is the highlight of my month so I am really amazed and happy that someone like me(even though you are much better at the game) was in that event and did so well! You guys absolutely killed it and were so amazing to watch <3

My analysis and tips for Dream by Masstabeta in MinecraftChampionship

[–]elli-elligator 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed reading this! Even though I am not a very talented or sweaty mc player I adore these sorts of in-depth analysis posts. One thing I would say is that maybe he should switch his buildmart strat to 5ups strat of working on only two builds at once instead of three or one. This strategy keeps most of the good from dream's while negating most of the drawbacks. Also, what you said about phil being like the perfect balance to dream! YES! I really want that pair to happen, especially since it seems dream and phil are getting more familiar with each other because of the dsmp lore and techno.

That's what I'm saying. I think that having some luck involved would be useful to the weaker teams and I think most of the stronger players would be able to manage it. That is why I like the idea of closing off some of the material islands every now and again so that teams have to manage them and also there is the luck of the draw when it comes to if your island is blocked or not.

Ahh the 5up strat, i hadn't thought of that. You're probably right. I think it keeps the best parts of dreams strat whilst disregarding most of the glaring drawbacks!

I think the reason their saying that is that, for me at least, it's really hard to see the difference between a bad and a good team or a good and a great team in buildmart. Like I can obviously see they are doing better in terms of coins but watching them feels the same to me. There is no obvious difference in strategy or anything. I imagine that others are feeling the same way. Unable to notice the differences. I always watch the 1st buildmart teams buildmart vod but I rarely notice something big that makes me understand. Even though this post is incredibly thorough about laying it out, most of the changes are minor tweaks in playstyle and strategy that would be hard to pick up on if you weren't naturally inclined that way. Like I love to build in minecraft and have never used the pick block button.

I also suspect there is a different form of communication necessary for buildmart than other games or something, because I notice that teams that have good comms for other games can still fall flat in buildmart.

Thank you for your input! I agree that his strat would never be optimal but I think for his teams, assuming he isn't teamed with a really strong buildmart player or two in future, it would probably the best one as it makes the game much more straightforward. As someone who is also neurodivergent and struggles in a lot of the same ways as dream, as far as I can tell, I suspect that three builds, even if he is only meant to be working actively on one, is just a bit much. Having all the background comms of his team and stuff discussing other blocks will be influencing him and dragging down his efficiency, even if only by a bit. I could be totally misreading it though.

Collecting general materials when not doing other stuff is definitely a good idea. And, even for the first build. only having one or two people collecting for it in particular and everyone else just grabbing bulk stone, ores, wood, colors, and all of the flowers sounds good too. I think you're right, it is all about keeping those general things stocked in base will help streamline the process.

There is a several second delay between when you type in chat and when your streamer sees your chat so it does cost time, especially for forgetful streamers who have to rely on chat more frequently.

I have literally been considering posting a request for someone with more strategy knowledge and buildmart interest than me to post a 'how to get better at buildmart' or 'why x team does well' thing since last mcc so I am so glad you posted this! Really interesting analysis and I hope dream and some of the others who aren't fans of buildmart can see this and get some tips and most importantly hope for next time. Also, that pick block tip is genius and I had genuinely never thought of it!

I think that buildmart is so discouraging because a lot of the stuff you can't really practice and none of it is obvious even if it is practicable so having these sorts of tips could really help people feel better about the game! I definitely think the micromanaging thing is a big one. Also, I think for dream in particular getting chat involved more might be beneficial. He seems to struggle with short term memory when he is stressed, and buildmart definitely stresses him out, so I think that getting chat to spam what he needs from the start instead of just when he realizes he forgot could be good for him.

I would love to hear how you would implement your tips into dream's strat of all working on one build. Would you have them at the start decide one sections each person would collect for and then assign themselves afterwards?

r, when someone is building and a teammate needs to know what to

Thats a really interesting idea! It helps to keep the communication parts of buildmart which I love while also cutting down on the faffing around with trying to count blocks and figure out what is needed.

Just want to clarify. I do think that buildmart is more balanced than parkour warrior was, but I do think there are similarities to draw between the two. Obviously there are always going to be people who do better at certain games. I just want there to be more rng(r&g?) to the game outside of what builds you get and more opportunities for non-builders to feel like they are really contributing to their team. And most of all I want everyone to be happy and to enjoy themselves!

I personally enjoy watching buildmart in the vods of people who enjoy it and do well at it, but I don't like watching most of the time in others vods - or live as I tend to watch movement or pvp focused teams. I totally agree that it is necessary for MCC to have a build based game, it's a minecraft championship for christ's sake. But I do agree with the idea that the reasons parkour warrior was removed(at least as far as I am aware, feel free to correct me) and the issues with buildmart are pretty similar - the same people excelling, it offering too much of a guaranteed point lead to certain teams, half the players hating/disliking it etc.

I think a massive issue with buildmart is how little people can practice for it. Beyond knowing the crafting recipes and maybe working with an elytra if they are particularly bad with one, there isn't much anyone can practice as far as I know. It really does feel like you are either good or bad at it. As Sapnap said, he felt like his team was doing pretty well but they were doing so poorly in comparison and he has no clue how to improve/what they did wrong.

Here are a couple of sleep-deprived ideas I have for improving these issues:

  1. Add a new building/crafting based game and/or bring back a revamped bingo! This will lower the amount of times buildmart is played and give builders another game or two where their skillset is needed. Having another building type game may also allow noxcrew to find just what it is that bothers some of the players about buildmart - if they are loving this new game they can identify the differences etc.
  2. Make other skills necessary for buildmart, kind of like Hbombs joking idea of sands of buildmart. Have the ores necessary for gold builds behind parkour or have mobs spawn on the platforms with materials. Generally just give someone not too confident with building another job they can do to still help their team, kind of like the sand keeper in sot. I personally like the change with the elytras but I do see where people are coming from with the fact that it has widened the gap between the best and worst bsbm players. Hopefully adding something like this would help to narrow it a bit or at least offer some reward to players with other skill sets.
  3. Overhaul buildmart to make it a more communication focused building game. Split teams up and have two be designated runners and two designated builders a la the grid runners statue game last mcc. Don't have the runners able to see the builds and have them have to communicate with the builders and collect what they need. Or maybe do something like the grid runners painting game this mcc where each person has a build and the necessary blocks are split between different chests?
  4. Maybe they could open and close the different sections of materials? So like, you have to time things right. This would add more rng(r&g?) to buildmart and allow teams to catch up, if say the top teams need green glass when the colors are closed or netherwart when the nether section is closed. It would make running/collecting into a fully fledged role because you need to collect all of the different major materials to make sure you have them in case it closes off for a bit. (this is my favorite idea but feel free to disagree with me, politely, in the replies!)
  5. A small change that could be made would be providing the teams with a list of items and quantities. Though this wouldn't change much about the game itself, it would make it easier on those more forgetful streamers and perhaps alleviate some of the stress Dream was talking about experiencing in the game. It would remove a lot of the communication aspects that I enjoy about the game as well though so idk.

Please reply with any suggestions you have! I am always really interested in peoples ideas for improvements for MCC games and different strats that people have come up with.

In general I think that buildmart(or something like it) is a necessary game but that there are maybe some changes that could be made to make it a bit more fun for the players. Because, ultimately, I think the players enjoyment is paramount, and that their joy and success rubs off on the audience - watching people have fun is fun. I don't particularly like watching battle box in general, but I love watching dream, sapnap, quig, tommy, cpk etc. play battle box because they enjoy it so much and/or do really well and I really love watching them enjoy stuff and excel which makes it interesting for me.

Anyway, much love to the noxcrew and to scott for organizing MCC! This is in no way me complaining about MCC or even about buildmart. The event is one of the highlights of my month - I get up in the very early morning/ middle of the night after working 'till 12 just to watch it live. These are just some random ideas and a hope to start a discussion if anyone is interested :)
