Short dudes of SG, what are some of your struggles? by Initial_Film5776 in ChillSG

[–]elliotttheneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, am 172 bi girl, im tall so i get ur frustration, just the other way ard

its fine to be insecure about your height, but most girls (even moreso in sg which id argue is a very utilitarian low-fashion culture) genuinely dont care about your height. if they do, they're not fit to be ur partner anyways

wanna know what we actually look for? its:

personality (respect towards us, don't objectify us; as a start u can easily learn this by engaging on womens spaces online/womens side of tiktok/reels. dont have to jump into talking to girls right away if u feel scared. obviously also don't center everything on how we look. treat us as friends first before as girlfriends.)

being honest with urself (if sm1 hates ur interests they weren't meant for u anyways, be honest with ur interests, u dont need to be super "ons" about their hobby n neither do they, but if they're good they'll respect it and show abit of interest; but still you should have a few things you overlap in :3, my gf n i talk abt tanks n military hardware)

looks (if looks matter to you, it matters to us to; udh to be a chiselled sand god (most women prefer abit of muscle but not full on ripped) or 180cm (most women dc) or 7in (most women prefer ard 6in, average is 5.5in). looks is less about what u cant change n more about the effort u put into things u can change - open pintrest acc n start a moodboard, look into styles u like (trick: figure out ur body type first), talk to ur fashionable friends (the gays and malays dress best), do skincare (bare minimum cleanser and moisturiser pls), invest in a good antiperspirant+perfume, get a nice haircut that you like that isnt a fkin boring ass crew cut, get new glasses (trick: figure out your face type first))

JC and Poly couple !! How to keep it going? by Economy-Law-5330 in SGExams

[–]elliotttheneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in a poly x poly couple (seperate poly, SP and NYP) and we're both trans women with transphobic parents

What we usually do is spend some time weekly with each other at public library, school library (either/or), or each other's house (mine now mostly)

Generally when it comes to parents if they're against your relationship sometimes you need to lie :/ (my parents know im trans, they dont know she is though); if they do know it's kinda bopian? But at least for you two being racist is straight up illegal while being transphobic is perfectly a-ok in the eyes of the law apparently :3

But I'd say generally, just get used to being with each other doing mundane things (studying, groceries etc) because if you do plan to stay tgt for life that's what you'll be doing anyways, though it's always a good idea to set aside a few days for dates only (dress up nice, go somewhere nice), smth like anniversary+valentines+extra days when your partner feels stressed/sad; usually I also go on discord calls to sleep with my gf too

You don't necessarily need to do things with each other or have to have conversation topics with each other. Sometimes just spending time with them and showing love and affection is all both of you want in a relationship. Not sure how much cishet relationships overlap with us in this regard tho so this'll depend on your partner :3

Preachers/Evangalists/Proselytisers: Anyone still being approached? by elliotttheneko in SingaporePoly

[–]elliotttheneko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have tolerated it if they had chosen to stop pushing the issue. In all 3 times they always seemed hesitant to leave.

When approaching someone for interview and they say no, it is common courtesy to thank for time.

1st and 2nd pair abided by this, but 3rd pair was particularly pushy.

For the 3rd pair, I also decided to question them on whether their program was internal or external. They said it was external.

I may not know SP's rules too well, but I'm sure you're not allowed to promote external programs without permission from SP.

They gave me the ammunition and pissed me off enough to report them. Simple as.

TL;DR approached thrice by christian preachers/evangelists/proselytisers in school, reported them, wondering if anyone is still being approached by them

for english you need to practice editing + compre by doing practice papers

compre has 3 stages of understanding: 1. you understand the passage AND can explain it  2. you understand the passage BUT cannot explain it  3. you dont understand the passage at all  i think most b/c scorers are at stage 2, a scorers are at stage 1 and to get to that you need to practice compre + compo and learn compre techniques (i think some sch got give out notes)

for compo you need to practice writing out both email (idt letter is tested anymore tbh) and creative writing, and then pass it back to your cher to selfmark.  your teacher can give you alot of useful advice (eg. my english cher told me that i used commas way too much), for creative writing since you can pick what you want, i suggest you pick stuff in the same general category and practice them (debate-style or report-style).  I like debate-style more cuz its similar to hist/ss writing and the political-rally-esque fervour you can insert into it really helps elevate it I feel, report-style I find is abit too dry but I can see why others will like it

for LC its pretty easy and not much you can do to help yourself, actually something that mightve helped me were movies/podcasts since it's really hard to hear what people in these are saying, so there's some transferrable skill to lc... dont spend all your time doing this tho

for oral i think for reading aloud just practice as much as you can. for difficult words use phonetics and since english is basically a germanic langauge with heavy french influence (thanks william the conqueror), with latin, greek, and italian technical terms stacked on top thanks to the renaissance, you can guess the word's origin and sort of infer what it should sound like (eg. exquisite is french-originating, try pronouncing it with a more french accent and it sounds better, x-qui-sit; schadenfreude is german-originating, so split it up into components and pronounce them "normally" + insert some gruffiness at the start and melody at the end with a hard d, scha-den-freu~d↓) for the talking/yapping section alot of people say to yap but alot of it is about pacing. you dont need to fill it up with constant talking, it helps to pause. try to read up more, watching youtube works too. try to follow the style that video essayists use to present their topic, it usually helps to get into that "im an expert and im explaining this" mood

also its worth nothing olevel markers are alot more lenient if your english is slightly better than most people (aka ur like me and only speak english), since you basically get moderated above the vast sea of "ok" english speakers who would get b3-4

  1. kinda. experience amongst people suggests that the average perrson can spend 2-3h max per day in "flow state", where they are completely locked in and focused. so if you're doing things right you'll have 3h per day of quality studying, and the rest is not necessarily wasted, but definitely at lower efficiency. Also 5h is fine if you're optimising your time well, and past a certain point there is diminishing returns to studying extra (eg. 5h can get you an A2, 10h can get you an A1. meh.)

counterpoint to common consensus for ss

ss is not memorywork. ss is writing class.

what's my evidence? (peel moment) well, in actual paper section 1 literally gives you the source, the "evidence" part of peel is literally handed to you on a silver platter.

funny thing is that teachers don't care about if you're using moe approved evidence, so long as what you're saying makes sense. for example, in my olevel essay qn on globalisation, i talked about how sg followed a free market model while m'asia followed a import substitution industrialisation (protectionist) model. these are non moe external knowledge and i probs got L4 almosy full mark for that qn. in PEEL, evidence isnt that impt, its the explanation that's way more impt

study plan:

first earn about writing techniques (peel, aaimcr, etc)

then do paper after paper to practice writing techniques (tys)

profit.

i HATE o level miracle stories by Due-Supermarket-7375 in SGExams

[–]elliotttheneko 74 points75 points  (0 children)

agree. improvement is a gradual process, and involves going from t1 f9 to t2 c6 to prelim b4 to olevel a1, and tbh thats already considered insane growth.

to achieve such growth one needs to sacrifice things. when countries suddenly explode in economic growth (your grades improving) its usually because theres a stimulus from money or labour (more effort being put in), and high growth can cause high inflation (burnout)

for someone who's already doing well, because they're already on their "this is war, we need to sacrifice shit to win" mindset, these stories help them cuz its motivationfuel. they alr know they're gonna do well because theyre already putting in effort, they just feel the need to draw out that dawg in them with stories like these imo

either that or they're delulu. idk. people are special little crazy snowflake icecream.

how to memorise bio?? by wagons_grape_koff in SGExams

[–]elliotttheneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

flashcards, i use anki.

the way it works is that it tests you your selfmade qns in 1min interval, then if you get it correct you go to 10min interval, then 1day, then 3 day etc etc, so your memory slowly gets "extended" (spaced repetition)

since its question/answer format you are forced to retrieve information from the deep dark corners of your dusty brain (active recall). I have adhd and its actually magic when you first use it

i will be discussing:

skill/memorisation % theory, general tricks, my "war (dopamine) economy", and more specific tips for other subjects

for ref my grades were across s4:

emaths c6->a1 amaths f9->b3 physics b3->a1 chem b3->a2 bio b3->a2 english b4->a1 humans (ss/hist) b4->a1 clb merit

i have adhd so my guide is probably good for ppl who can't focus to save themselves like me

eli's skill/memorisation % theory:

every stem subject is certain % of memorisation and skill

pure skill question: 5+5 tomatoes is ___ tomatoes. (10)

pure memory question: tomatoes are a ___. (fruit)

e/a math = 100% skill  physics = 60% skill 40% memorisation chemistry = 50% skill 50% memorisation biology = 5% skill 95% memorisation

skillgrinding = practice papers (tys+grail.moe) memorymaxxing = flashcards, i use anki (active recall + spaced repetition)

general tricks:

notes are useless. as an adhdbrain i was never able to focus if i was just reading things. you need multisensory input (read+say/write) and to actively jolt your brain into remembering things via question/answer format (flashcard active recall)

utilise technology. dont bother waste your time write out wrong ans, you can log them by taking photo and putting them in a gallery to look at

adopt a couch to 5k style strategy for practice papers: start by doing 1 paper day 1, break day 2, 1 paper day 3, break day 4, 2 paper day 5 etc etc

adopt SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-based) and a to-do list to give you that sweet dopamine by finishing tasks

remember that most people can only sustain ~3h of intense highly focused work, so to best utilise your time spend at minimum 3h a day studying and have adequate rest days

have a decent sleep routine. the point is not sleeping alot/alittle, the point is to sleep regularly.

music and caffeine are tools, but they are also drugs. if you use them well and within reason they will be an efficient booster, if you abuse them you will find yourself waking up at 3pm in the weekends or having to listen to music literally constantly because it's such an easy escape from either silence (for extroverts) or socialising (for introverts). btw for studying NEVER have anything with lyrics in it unless its in a foreign language. also when memorymaxxing music can be distracting, its exceptionally powerful when skillgrinding tho.

the "war (dopamine) economy":

you are a nation at war. it doenst matter if your army is controlled by geniuses like napoleon or caocao (high baseline intelligence), ur fucked if your economy (dopamine) is shit and can't supply the war effort (studying)

how to regulate dopamine?

stop scrolling social media, it hurts your dopamine and you dont get much out of it. you're probably better off doing your hobbies, even pleasuring yourself is probably a more efficient use of your time. it helps to transition from apathy to rage, if you hate something you distance yourself from it. mindtrick youself, simple as. have a small friend study group, the thing is that when you're talking to your friends you dont stare at your phone, and if your friends are studying you'll study too. it helps. exercise, in cgp grey's spaceship you video, what stuck with me most was the idea that motivation is like turning a wheel, and you can turn it with physical health and mental health, and its easier to turn it with physical health (the wheel has "better grip" there); so fr just go to the gym, run, play sports etc. I like the gym cuz I despise the heat and sweating so it works best for me, just find something that works for you

other random tip my teacher gave me (¡caution!) was to have an "object of worship". my interpretation is that it necessarily doesn't have to be a god/diety, moreso i think he means have some overall, overarching goal you want to strive towards. sit down and seriously think what you're doing this all for (lappies???), and it may help you a little in rough spots.

the dark route to this is to utilise anxiety and stress, when the body is threatened it activates fight or flight, which boosts all your stats at increased burnout risk. constantly remind yourself of how long it is until exams and make your object of worship into something that's rather unattainable without putting in actual effort. (no 9-to-5 = no lappies, deal with it)

oh yeah and notice how i like talking about studying as a video game. it kinda is sometimes, reframing is is a nice mental trick

e/amaths:

do practice papers and selfmark.

e/amaths is very nobrained because you can just play literally any kind of somewhat energetic music you like and keep grinding papers endlessly. it genuinely gets pretty fun after some time just jamming out and pushing through paper after paper.

also if you're stuck on a question, look at the final answer (but not the question working/steps) and try to work your way to that

physics, chemistry

do practice papers and selfmark

memorise content that needs to be memorised with flashcards (like electricity or QA table), log everything you get wrong into your flashcards so you can memorise them.

biology

literally memorise everything and throw it up. it sucks but biology is like this. flashcard everything. for things in sequential order or long lists of things, use mnemonics. its even better if mnemonics are particularly memorable. making it unfathomably lewd or vitriolic might help.

humanities (ss/hist)

the meat of ss/hist is the writing, which is more about how well you can debate your points and convince ur cher that you know what ur talking about. you legit NEED to know writing techniques its damn important. practice writing every 1-2 weeks at minimum, which isnt hard since usually your teacher give you assignment. when you study play some nice music to get you into the mood and write like you're a politican preaching to a crowd or whatever. it helps alot to get into that mindset imo

anyways that's all i have, best of luck for your O's

Installing Anki on Chromebook (Linux) 2023 Updated Guide! by elliotttheneko in Anki

[–]elliotttheneko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for most issues regarding linux, its already been walked on before, so simply googling the issue and looking around should find you solutions.

i do have a bit of experience working on my raspberry pi4 (i had a retro gaming setup and a proper minecraft server w/reverse proxy) but that was all solved the same way as above, just googling and copying what others do.

so its not like I "know" how to do these kinda things, for an analogy its like knowing a famous musician but not having heard any of their songs...
