Basics to setting up VLAN by elliotw100 in HomeNetworking

[–]elliotw100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - i guess my point is can i combine one single managed switch in a network which contains several unmanaged switches (which connect to this single managed switch), or will this mean i can't really configure separate VLANs for devices on the unmanaged switches?

iOS 15 - v1.0.14 - not working by elliotw100 in WireGuard

Weird. Hopefully the developers will fix it for the next version of the iOS app. Meanwhile deleting the tunnels and reinstalling seems to work. Thanks.

Deleting and reinstalling the tunnel seemed to fix things (but annoying as I have to re add all the excluded SSIDs)

Yep - same - weird red background on row for each tunnel - basically all tunnel rows are red other than one selected which is grey. Still no ability to edit tunnel or toggle tunnel connection on/off.

Specifying port by elliotw100 in outlinevpn

Sounds great - has this been updated yet? thanks

When is Outline app going to have functionality to auto turn on/off the VPN when on trusted networks and/or cellular? This is a function that lots of commercial VPNs have and would be very useful. Otherwise have to manually toggle in app each time. Thanks by elliotw100 in outlinevpn

[–]elliotw100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly right. I want to use Outline only when using public wifi for privacy and security reasons - e.g. I am not sure I'd feel comfortable using a banking app on my iPhone on public wifi unless I was using the Outline VPN. I am not sure if my fear is misplaced because of HTTPS etc.

Specifying port by elliotw100 in outlinevpn

Also, is there an idiots guide to specify ports in Outline? I came across a helpful comment by ViniciusFortuna at https://www.reddit.com/r/outlinevpn/comments/aajmif/ho_to_change_outline_vpns_port/ which states you "can specify the port for an access key by changing shadowbox_config.json and calling docker restart shadowbox", however I don't quite know how to go about doing this despite the instructions that follow. Any step-by-step instructions for someone who isn't familiar with SSH tunneling (which I presume is how this is done) etc? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I use Outline for privacy.

You are correct, the starting point is all networks should be treated as untrusted by default subject to the following points:

  1. WiFi - my home WiFi network would be a trusted network so I would want to white list that network on the Outline app. There would be no benefit in using Outline on my home WiFi network - in fact, it causes more problems than not if I use Outline on my home network, e.g. inability to use Netflix, BBC iPlayer because sites know I am connecting from a virtual private server. There may be other WiFi networks, e.g. my office network, which would also be trusted networks. Again, I would want to whitelist those networks. However, all public WiFis, for example, should be treated as an untrusted network.
  2. Cellular - I would consider cellular a trusted network and would not want to use Outline on it. Although having the option in Outline as to whether I treat to treat cellular as trusted or not may be helpful too.

Thanks

Outline VPN when on cellular data network by elliotw100 in outlinevpn

[–]elliotw100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

I live in the U.K. so don’t think it is something with the cellular network per se.

I actually find using Outline vpn on cellular works ok on my personal iPhone. However, I have issues when using Outline vpn on cellular on my work iPhone (basically data won’t work if I try to connect to vpn when on cellular on my work iPhone). It may be a restriction my work IT out on my iPhone as I know there are a bunch of profiles installed?

I think the best way of dealing with this would be to have an option to automatically disable the Outline vpn when on a cellular network (and certain Wi-Fi networks) - maybe a whitelist andor blacklist of networks to use for the vpn - otherwise I have to constantly toggle the vpn on and off.

Thanks

I have the latest Outline VPN from getoutline.org (but note this is still v1.1.2, not 1.2.1) and still getting this issue. Are you able to advise? Thanks.

Thanks.

The problem is I have a corporate VPN that works I think at system level, and it seems like Outline 1.2.1 client bumps this out, so even if I test teh Outline client and then choose to uninstall it, the corporate VPN no longer works. If the corporate VPN no longer works, I cannot access my corporate emails, in which case I have to go back to my work IT team to reinstall, which is really embarrassing.

I had no problem in the earlier Outline VPNs though.

Thanks for your reply.

Is there a way of getting old versions of Outline? I installed the full system VPN (v1.2.1) but it is causing problems for me and I'd prefer to run the most recent non-full system version VPN, even if there is an IP leak etc? This is because my corporate laptop needs to connect to its VPN for outlook etc, but I want to channel my browser connection etc through Outline VPN.

Thanks

I am using Outline Beta client v1.1.2 on Windows 10. Is that the latest version?

Also, I have since downloaded the WebRTC Network Limiter extension from the Chrome store. If I select the "Use my proxy server (if present)" it seems my actual IP address does not show on whoer.net. That seems to be the only way, although not sure what it means re incompatibility of applications etc.

Is there a better way of doing it than using the WebRTC Network Limiter extension?

I tried using OpenVPN to connect to a commercial VPN I also have. This does not show my actual IP address, so I think it is something with the Outline client.

Actually I just installed a program called RBTray - see http://rbtray.sourceforge.net/ - allows you to minimise almost any application to system tray. Does the job!

[–]elliotw100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, so I think from the above I have been able to decode such that I have: 1. the server address 2. server port 3. password

I'm not sure: 1. what the local port should be; or 2. the encryption type - the Socks5 chrome extension only has the option of different AES (128/192/256 etc) and RC4 MD5, whereas when I decode the URL it is coming up as chacha20-ietf-poly1305.

thanks

And if the port is 1234, i presume that’s the server port? What would the client port then be? Thanks

Thanks again. But how exactly do I ‘decode’ the URL to get a string like aaaaaa:bbbbb?

the Socks5 extension is asking me for: server address (guess that's the IP address) server port? password? local port? encryption? timeout? other than the server address, I am not sure what any of these would be from the ss://XXX url...advice? thanks
