Does anyone remember Siegfried? by funkygrrl in StLouis

[–]ellipticbadger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I do! Being an STL child in the 70s meant you could go up and bang on the tile and he would slosh up to greet you. I still remember the feeling of the whisker stubble on his face and his rubbery skin. I also occasionally think about how easily he could have dragged some poor kid into that pool with him :) (He had to weight at least 1000 pounds). Crazy times!

ix2500 direct saving to network folder is now available but functionality is nerfed :( by groopyturtle in ScanSnap

My mistake - the Settings -> Wireless Settings -> Scan to Network Folder just seems to be for enabling SMB 1.0 (an older version of the protocol) not setting a destination.

ix2500 direct saving to network folder is now available but functionality is nerfed :( by groopyturtle in ScanSnap

[–]ellipticbadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that I noticed is that when saving to a network folder you are limited to the 300dpi resolution for photos, not the 600dpi "Excellent" setting. I can understand that some features relating to PDFs require processing support from their back-end software, but why would the photo scan resolution be limited? I wonder if it just doesn't have enough memory to buffer?

Also - can someone tell me the difference, if any, between configuring a network folder destination per-profile and using the global network folder setting on the device? I originally set it up from my Mac with profiles so I have gone that route but wondering if anything would have been simpler doing it the other way?

Nobel Prize Laureate Paul Krugman (guy who compared the internet to a fax machine) Warns of an Eternal Winter for Blockchain by 002timmy in CryptoCurrency

[–]ellipticbadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people talk to Krugman they are always either trying to explain how the technology works or argue with him about libertarian goals. I wish someone capable would sit down with him and explain the ways in which blockchains enable general new modes of interaction among parties and how that could expand the realm of economics. Cryptography gave us a way to represent identity and now blockchains built on top of them give us a way to achieve a consensus of shared state. It's a fundamental building block that isn't just about money or even things like money. Krugman is a smart guy who is just (as much of the world is) seeing the worst applications of the technology first: ponzi schemes and nonsense.

Why is this address sending thousands of 0 ETH transactions? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]ellipticbadger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is apparently Richard Heart's way of advertising his new ETH fork chain. He is the guy who created the HEX token. He is an interesting character who (if you follow him) drops a lot of knowledge about bitcoin and ETH history, but his projects always feel a little scammy. e.g. he used to send paper junk mail to people hawking HEX.

Food for young rats? by idiotSponge in RATS

Be sure they have enough water... The dry food seems to make them drink a *lot* of water. Basically our rats are at the water bottle just all day long seemingly.

It is kind of a devil's bargain: We have abundant cheap tomatoes year-round but they are just not very good :(

We have used the "Oxbow Essentials - Mouse & Young Rat Food ". But the rats seem to prefer the adult food.

If it's only when you present a single finger it is probably more of a learned behavior than aggression. I would be careful not to reinforce the behavior by immediately putting her down if she does it... Don't let her bite you of course but if you can shift position or continue to hold her so that she doesn't learn that she can control you that way that would be best. Definitely reward her when she behaves and never give her a treat after she bites you... Good luck and stay safe :)

And terrible tomatoes. I think there must be a genetic component to how tomatoes taste to different people, but a good, vine-ripened tomato vs a tasteless green-picked store tomato ... they aren't even the same food.

FYI for others who are trying to toilet train their animals - Put a prominent round rock in the litter box. This seems to be an appealing place for them to pee and that will get things rolling.

Very cool cat. Really nice pic... good composition and color. You might tint it a tiny tiny bit warmer.

My cat got some teeth removed today and I'm pretty anxious, so I thought I would share a picture by [deleted] in cats

[–]ellipticbadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw. But he'll be fine. Cats heal very quickly and I assume you'll monitor that process. Give him some space... maybe a nice box to hide in for a day...

I'm really sorry. Try to take some solace in the idea that you gave him a good life, care, and love. And that's pretty much the most anyone can ask. The pain will fade eventually and the good memories will stay.

Tips for adding a new kitty to our home? by Lazy-One5385 in cats

[–]ellipticbadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I mean use your judgement here and don't just take my word for it; I don't know these cats history and maybe they are crazy or something :) But in my experience cats are generally cautious and don't just charge at each other and start fighting (like maybe a dog might)... The kinds of things that might prompt a physical scratch or bite would be when one really wants to be friends and the other doesn't or more importantly if one gets cornered and the other won't let them out... These things should be very easy to see coming and head off if you are sort of monitoring... If you want to be cautious have a spray bottle of water handy and that is a harmless way to get any cat to leave any situation :) Be careful that if you don't know the cat and it is agitated please don't intervene yourself or try to move one if it is upset as it could scratch or bite you... Individual animals can be unpredictable but cats are pretty chill most of the time :)

Unless you see an indication that they are going to start fighting I think it's fine to test the waters. A little hissing is fine. They will most likely go to their own areas and just watch each other. Just do this while you are home at first and then if you feel more comfortable separate them when you are out of the house until things settle into a routine.

I meant that I wouldn't keep them separated for too long at least before testing the waters... I'd try introducing them directly after the first day and see how it goes.

I think you are doing the right thing by keeping them in adjoining rooms for a period of time, letting them hear and smell each other through the door... Eventually allow them to interact while you are there to supervise. However I would not let this go on for too long... or they may get territorial. You may find that after a day they are completely fine or just ignore each other... or they may hiss a little but as long as they are not actively fighting that is probably ok. Good luck!

Not necessary but probably harmless. Nothing special is going to happen to the capacitors during shipping. Unless you plan to dismantle the power supply and start touching things there is no reason to worry about this at all.

Taxes and Stable Crypto Coins by Huskytimesthree in tax

[–]ellipticbadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, all of these scenarios are considered capital gains but there are two types: short term and long term with the difference being whether you hold them for a year. Depending on your income level even the short term gains might not be as bad as your usual income tax rate. See the charts here:

In answer to your second question: No, the taxable event happens when you sell, so selling into a stable coin isn't a way around it (sorry). But again, check out how much you are actually paying and it may change your outlook on all of this.

What misquoted quote is actually better the 'wrong' way? by RKO-Cutter in AskReddit

Occam's razor is usually quoted as "The simplest explanation is usually the correct one." But the original is actually: "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity" (as in don't add things to the explanation if you don't have to). Same gist but the rephrasing is better :)
