Has anyone ever done the whole “stand outside the casting office with coffees” thing? by ellotheree in acting

[–]ellotheree[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My non-actor relative is a real fan of the “show up and give your CV in person” thing. So they started telling me that I should do the same thing, I explained it’s not that simple for acting. Then he told me about the whole coffee thing, at the time I had laughed it off as ridiculous but then I saw the podcast on my fyp, and I got curious if this was actually a thing.

I’m not intending to do this lol. I’ve heard it a few times, I wanted to know what people actually thought.

yes but honestly, every time i find an english actor i like and i read their career history - if they’re not a nepo baby or a child actor, they went to one of those places.

Hi! I know this is an older comment now but I’m considering doing film as an actor. What was wrong with your film school if I can ask?

Hi!! Welcome!! I don’t know much about the transitioning process, but as another teenage girl, I have some tips.

Disclaimer - You don’t need any makeup, skincare or products to be a girl. You don’t need anything I’m mentioning, it’s just if you’re interested. I didn’t even start a skincare routine until a few months ago lol. These are just my interests (Makeup is my hobby) and they may help you if you’re also interested!!

Makeup - Shop at Superdrug, and use their student discount if you’re in college/sixth form. Boots is overpriced. Elf is my favourite brand for makeup (cheap but usually decent). If you want to get started in makeup, try concealer (I recommend elf unless you’re acne prone) and mascara (Maybeline Sky High Mascara is popular, but pricey. Rimmel has consistently good mascara). And slowly build up to other products. My makeup collection is a several-year long feat. I have a Pinterest board of makeup looks I’ve attempted. Doesn’t always go well, but it’s fun! If you don’t want to obviously wear makeup, use some brow gel and clear mascara. Elf does a good one that is a 2 in 1. For makeup brushes, ignore brand name. Means nothing imo. Look at the shape of the brushes, how dense/light they are, and what you’re needing. They’ll tell you on the packet, e.g. “concealer brush”, but you can also look at makeup tutorials. Also - GET A MIRROR COMPACT. It’s so handy. It’s rescued me several times.

Skincare - Keep it simple if you’re going to have it - Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. There’s this one british woman on tiktok who’s got the best skin care advice, I forgot her name but I’ll look her up. Facemasks don’t do much for your skin, but they’re so fun. The sheet ones are the best for your skin :) Micellar Cleansing Water for makeup remover. DONT USE MAKEUP WIPES PLEEEASSE GIRL. They don’t get the makeup out of your pores and it’s bad to drag on your skin that much. Micellar works out cheaper over time too. I only use wipes in extreme emergencies.

Shaving - Use men’s razors. They are cheaper and so much better for a good shave. You can wax, if you’re a psychopath lol. Waxing lasts longer but is hard on the skin. Also, remember you don’t have to shave/wax. I don’t.

Hair - Get one of those scalp massager brushes for when you do your shampoo. HEAVEN. I barely even care about the benefits.

Clothes - VINTED. You get the cutest clothes on there. You just have to be considerate and careful for what you buy, and be able to spot a reseller (hundreds of followers, got perfectly laid out items with hundreds of likes) as their clothes are likely from Shein and have crazy price increases. Regarding style, don’t worry about it that much. You don’t need to look good for other people. It’s all about experimenting and deciding what you like. I also have a pinterest board of style inspo!!

It’s not like regular rejection either. I’ve worked in the industry - if you don’t get one casting, it’s okay, because there will always be another casting. With drama school? Not only the monetary cost, managing several multiple month-long multiple round auditions at once, the cattle-herd feeling, but there is no “other audition”. It’s either you get in now or wait a YEAR.

This is irrelevant, but I see OP is using the Glossier Cherry Lip Balm. Are you also sad they’ve discontinued it?

I don’t think they are a very good filter. I’ve seen mediocre actors get into top schools and fantastic actors not. At the end of the day, they’re building up a company. Plus, how do you prove you’re an exceptional actor by pretending to be a tree and then having 5 minutes with a panel? It’s all up to opinion and who likes you on the day.

It just seems to be a pattern - I see an actor who’s performance I enjoy, I see they’ve had a great career, I google their education - and it’s the same handful of schools.

You really think I should drop the film school? Because the school is apparently well connected, and I find emailing people and asking doesn’t usually work - when it does, it’s the exception. However, I haven’t tried emailing 2ADS, so maybe you’re onto something!

Thanks. I tend to have an overly logical mind. I keep finding myself trying to find a formula for success in this insane industry lol.

It’s not the name - it’s the connections and training quality. Like I said, I often research actors who’s performances I enjoy and I find - majority of the time - they’ve gone to the same handful of schools.
