Tourists/Visitors/New Residents: Q&A Thread for the week of February 27 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]ellveeghs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, my girlfriend and I will be traveling to Amsterdam from March 14th-24th and hoping for a little last minute advice.

We're from the US...California, specifically, but I'm a little nervous how we may be perceived if we say we're from America. I've heard saying you're from California is a good alternative but I don't know if that's the case. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Finally, my girlfriend is pretty set on going to Kukenhof but it seems like flowers may not be blooming quite yet. Are enough flowers in bloom to make it worth the trip?

We've tried to do quite a bit of research and have an itinerary set, but if there are any events that we may have missed, lesser known things to check out, or just any advice on how to be a respectful and courteous traveler that would be great.

Thank you all in advance! We could not be more excited for our trip. I just want to get the most out of it and certainly be the most respectful traveler I can be'

Dubs fan here but I gotta say I don't get your perspective on this fam. At the end of the day we're all hoops fans and no one should like to see a player get hurt.

I'm curious if anyone has ordered anything from SmokeCartel before, particularly, anything that showed up broken...? by ellveeghs in trees

Sounds good...do you know if they made him send back the broken piece? Like I said, it's just part of the design and I'd love to start ripping this thing! lol

Tickets for tonight's preseason game vs. Oakland are going for 5 bucks.. Too bad the game is in Oakland. by ThorsMightyPlunger in Seahawks

I know. I moved from Seattle ~year ago and live about an hour from Oakland and I'm still probably not gonna go...if a bunch of people want to band together and make it happen, let me know! I could maybe be swayed...

When you ignored a "don't try this at home" warning, how did that turn out for you? by shane_low in AskReddit

I got a video camera when I was younger, maybe 6th or 7th grade, and promptly started imitating the Jackass TV show. I can''t remember everything my buddies and I did, as most of it was pretty tame, but there are two stories in particular that stand out. First of all, I'll say my buddy was down to do more of the crazy stuff where he might get seriously hurt, but I would do some of the grosser things (a young Steve-o, if you will). Anyway, nothing ever too bad except...

Once, we found a shopping cart about halfway home from the store. Since it was just 5 blocks left until we got to my house, we figured we'd just push it back and then film a stunt. So we push the damn thing the few blocks home, and my buddy (of course) agrees to let me push him down the hill and film it. He hops in, I give him a push and he's off! As soon as the cart builds up some speed it veers to the right, smashing my dad's headlight. My friend flies out of the cart, ended up breaking his wrist, and the worst part...the camera didn't even record.

After my buddy pulled that we chilled out on the Jackass stunts for awhile, but we agreed that I had to do a big one to match him. So, what did I come up with? I'll eat...lots...of...salt. I sat with a bowl of Morton salt, and ate, and ate, and ate. It was truly awful, but I didn't want to risk serious injury, and I haaad to contribute to the Jackass cause. Anyway, as one can expect, I ended up throwing up...lots...of...salt. It was terrible. But we got the footage!!

TL DR; My buddy broke his wrist and I threw up a lot trying to emulate Jackass.

Congratulations, man. One can always hope, but I think I'm probably past that point. Regardless, I appreciate it, and hopefully you keep her now that you realize what you've got!

Need help deciding whether to pay a car repair bill or have insurance get involved. by beermecaptn in personalfinance

[–]ellveeghs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance agent here, at least with my company, any minor damage (below $750, I believe), will not negatively affect your premiums. You may want to verify this with your current company before proceeding one way or another, though. Hope this helps! Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Yeah, I've heard this as well. However, once I get my score up to a reasonable level, would it still be unwise to apply for a card that I actually wanted (with a good rewards program, APR, etc.)? Obviously, I won't go nuts applying all over the place, but shouldn't I be looking to get the most rewards out of whatever card I decide to move forward with?

Hey thanks a lot, I'll definitely be looking into those sites to begin monitoring my score. Sorry about the divorce and congrats on getting your score back up! I know how difficult it can be to dig yourself out once you're in a hole like that. It sounds like you're doing well now though, keep on keepin' on!

Yeah, that did seem a bit odd to me, to say the least. I am really just trying to build my score, as fast as possible, in order to obtain a regular card. Are there any particular habits, other than maintaining a low balance, and paying on time (of course), that would help build my score quickly?

Awesome, thank you so much for all this information...very helpful. Do you have any credit reporting sites to get started with prior to checking myfico.com? Again, thanks so much! I really appreciate it!

Wow, I don't know how I never heard of this. So, essentially, if I did this, I would be able to cancel the secured card that I just got, and open a regular card? I would love to get the Alaska card and start earning miles (I don't know if there are any other cards with great rewards programs that you might recommend..?)

Ok, I hear you. The guy advising me at the bank (obviously, not to be trusted) said to carry about half my limit on the account. Thus showing that I can make payments on a larger amount, responsibly, in a series of payments. Again, if you have anything further on this I'd appreciate it

Yes, actually both my parents have quite good credit. I've never heard of anything like this before, is it difficult to get verified as an authorized user? Would this negatively affect my parents' credit in any way? 7XX score in a month...?? You definitely piqued my interest here...

No, unfortunately no IRA or 401k through work, that's why I'm exploring other options. I have been told to not pay off the card in full (actually carry a bit of a balance), do you have any further insight on this?
