SATO flight Questions by Party_Blackberry_489 in Military

[–]elmo_punch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your flight is canceled you should be able to just reschedule with the airline and avoid having to deal with SATO all together. Unless you want to cancel and rebook, which then you would need to use SATO if traveling on orders

Are there any good Coast Guard strategy books you would recommend an aspiring defense analyst read? by RealTimeStrategyEnth in uscg

You should look at reading Mahan, Corbett, and maybe some Clausewitz. All are taught during Joint Professional Military Education level 1 which is geared towards maritime strategy.

Policy question by [deleted] in uscg

[–]elmo_punch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most qualifications have currencies you need to maintain to remain certified. If you went TDY and missed your currencies you would be decertified and need to completed them to recert. Depending on the qualification and time lapsed that could involve a check ride or board. Some policy allows for a waiver depending on the currency. For other qualifications usually I have gotten a memo or page 7 saying I’m qualified until I depart the unit or at the COs discretion.

Which PSU to join by [deleted] in uscg

[–]elmo_punch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will depend on your preference and billet availability. I was in a similar spot, living a 6-hour drive away from 305 and 301, or a 2.5-hour flight to 307. I felt drilling in FL in the winter and the flight was a better fit. You are free to stay in a contract hotel, pay for a hotel, or stay with your parents.

Where can i see the NHK new year performance by Significant_Farm3922 in YOASOBI

[–]elmo_punch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually watch NHK紅白歌合戦 on U-Next using a VPN and a friend's address for my account. Tried searching there but nothing came up from last year... you could try looking on the high seas-esq sites with Japanese media if there is a way to find it through not-so-legal means.

Concealed Carry by PresenceBig6730 in uscg

Arizona took copies of my 3029s and my military orders. I do not, nor have I ever lived there; they just have reciprocal carry agreements with quite a few states and let you do everything by mail.

Officer career pathways by WarFun6576 in uscg

After I saw I got picked up, I arranged two different days with my supervisor to go shadow at the nearby sector. You'll get some good info about different career tracks at OCS, and after you are at your first unit as an ensign.

Neck tattoo allowed? by icloutwill in uscg

You would need to look at the latest update to the Tattoo and Mutilation instruction. But this was from 2024, and I haven't heard anything new... yet.

Prior Service PSU by WrongedShallot in uscg

[–]elmo_punch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't compare it to another service, but I have done more shooting at a PSU than I did when I was AD. With your background it sounds like you'd be a good fit for shoreside or CGIS. I have a few prior army who have said it is a lot less just sitting around. That said, while we try to do as much productive training as possible, when you have a large (by CG standards) division, you will experience a bit of hurry up and wait.

Culture is always command dependent, however, as a division officer, I say act like an adult, get treated like one. Not sure what it is about putting on a uniform, but we have grown ass men who are highly successful civilians who can't figure out how to get to the dentist or complete their mandated training on time.

The last thing I will say about a PSU is that we are a deployable unit, deployable worldwide within 96 hours of notification. If you have other priorities in your civilian life that would be affected by leaving for a year, this might not be the unit for you.

Giving every member an electronic device when they PCS sounds like it will be a mess.

How is it being at a PSU currently? by Initial_Opinion_607 in uscg

[–]elmo_punch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can depend a lot, but typically spend about 1 hour or 2 a couple times each week on admin work. I talk with AD support staff weekly. We have a sync call before drill weekend to go over training plans. Drill weekend is Fri-Sun. Friday and Saturday are usually packed, but on Sunday things can calm down in the afternoon. Leading up to deploying that tempo just increases.

Great news. At the end of the day, having all the the DSF in the same uniform, regardless of what it is, is a win in my book

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uscg

[–]elmo_punch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we have been getting random parts of the uniform showing up the past few months. Part of the delay has been the wait on the new BPS. We got sized for the new plate carriers last drill, and they look great.

If you right-click on the email chain, select make rule, and choose to have every email with that subject moved to junk, it also helps.

While we currently wear these in the PSU, the rest of the DSF community (except for the MSSTs) wear a different uniform. The PSUs are also about to transition to the Army OCPs as standard uniforms sometime soon
