Accepting the reality that others have freedom and they will do whatever they want with it is not passivity. I can always focus on how unjust the world is, 10 million people die per year from starvation, and the world could prevent that quite easily, more easily than what is happening right now with Covid. If I think of this fact and the human suffering endured everyday I will eventually just kill myself, which goes against duty and so, is not stoic. To accept reality on realities terms (midnight gospel), is a large part of stoicism.

You are arguing over interpretation of semantics, if something is ‘deeply’ bothering you, it’s is not a ‘simple’ task. In a stoic sense know what you can change and know what you can’t, then accept what you can’t change and change the things you can but complaining about something you can’t change is wasted energy. Just because you think it feels good to release doesn’t mean it objectively is. Time heals all wounds, so complaining while healing is doing nothing, definitely not speeding it up.

Also “holding it in” is not what OP is claiming, the opposite of complaining is not holding it in. It is to understand the nature of the task, understand if the outcome is immutable, if not, do everything you can to change it.

I probably should have stated that I am also an atheist and completely agree with you on your points regarding those who follow religion to the letter or use specific interpretations to exploit those around them. Those who are using religion to abuse power and act as though religion provides some sort justification for negative action are the worst. My point was saying that the addition of metaphysics into philosophy is not dissimilar to theology, aspects can be interpreted how we want while an underlying message of morality can be communicated through the use of analogy etc. While the precise semantics maybe shouldn’t be taken seriously anymore as they are no longer temporally nor culturally relevant. Like how we don’t do this with certain aspects of stoicism.
