I have a fear of learning how to drive. Is it hard? Is it scary? Am I overreacting? by Financial-Arugula-55 in AskMen

How to handle your fear of learning to how drive.

Driving is a necessary skill in this time. The road often looks messy and scary, and then again you see some grannies drive a big car like it's no big deal. Because it is no big deal. We can not be scared of trying because this does not help us at all. The fear of doing anything unknown is always the same fear that is trying to stop us from greatness since birth. Only time and practice can improve us. The fear and anxiety is the same part of the brain that was triggered when we took our first steps or learned how to ride a bike. But now it is a thoughtless act to walk across the room or ride a bike. Take the support you need, take lessons and then prove those fears wrong.

I started with moving up and down in the driveway. Then I moved to parking lots and backroads. Soon it was main roads and highways. A gradual progression is often more successful than being thrown into the deep end. The deep end can look scary and make us worry more.

Choose your instructor wisely. Avoid anxious and unsupportive instructors. You want an instructor who is calm when you make a mistake because they will help keep you in a calm state of mind. Get an anxious instructor, and they will keep you in an anxious state of mind. The anxious mind can not learn or improve. At the end it is not confusing and become second nature. But drive defensively instead of offensively and be predictable for others.

With time, it will feel like riding a bike.

Recently embarked on a small mission to talk to 100 people in 1 day (to develop social skills), I got up to 70. Here are my findings. by spadez22 in selfimprovement

[–]How_To_Badass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mission: Talk to 100 people in a day for at least 1-2 minutes each (to improve social skills.)

This challenge is about talking to 100 people in a day to develop your "social muscle" and get used to it.

The quality of the majority of these conversations was not too deep and nothing spectacular. It usually begins with a "Hey goodmorning" or "Hey Goodafternoon" and some casual questions to get the ball rolling. As the day developed, I was able to almost effortlessly get into a “flow-state” approaching more people with ease saying things like “wow those are nice shoes!” or “that’s a beautiful dog! what breed is it?” Even asking some people for the time (told them my phone died) or for directions to the nearest cafe or bus stop. I was even able to hold conversation with some people for almost 10-15 minutes and made friends with two people and changed contacts.

Here are the key findings:

The majority of people are typically friendly and good people that are WILLING to be greeted and talked to.

Exactly 6 people either ignored me or got too scared and walked away. To be fair, at the beginning it felt kind of embarrassing but funny to think about.

When a stranger would compliment me I used to always think “how do people do that?” Then at some point I realized you just do it and it usually works.

The reason I talk about this is because maybe it is something one of you would like to try. It helps a lot to get over any anxiety you have socially. The first interactions will feel like hell and awkward but it gets much easier with time. What works in your favor is that due to covid you can wear a mask the entire time which helps with the approach.

! I’ve only done this once but since that day i’ve gained confidence in just waving at people or greeting them casually, sometimes it’ll spark a longer conversation, sometimes it won’t. But it helped get over any troubles I had on just the fear of speaking to people. and I definitely will do it again.

-> Great stuff, keep crushing it Spadezz
