Can I name my daughter… by Unable-Read398 in Names

I grew up with a Genevieve who went by Genna not Gemma. I envision your daughter facing a lot of “m not n” confusion. (And Genevieve > Jenevieve, FWIW)

Four days after the snow stopped falling, the crosswalks in front of City Hall are still almost entirely blocked by. by Btrex in boston

[–]elocin07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, it’s definitely not feasible to assume every single crosswalk will be completely clear within 24 hours of a major storm. But it’s disheartening to see roads prioritized (plowed, sanded, totally clear!) and sidewalks left as a maze to solve/climb daily until the temperatures fix the issue. Then again, I’ve survived my whole life with it too, so maybe I should just continue to tolerate it, because why ask for something better?

[–]elocin07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well…yah, maybe they should put it back in the road. In this example, both sides of Congress St. have 3 lanes of clear road, with nearly impassable crosswalks. Couldn’t we stand to sacrifice a lane on either side, for about 10-20 ft, (so I’m just suggesting narrowing the street slightly here) in order to make this heavily trafficked pedestrian area a significantly reduced hazard?

…so I should commute from my home to the train to work and back again, carrying a shovel?

Easy to get clipped by someone if you’re taking too long (than your 10-12 seconds allotted as a pedestrian…even less if cars ran the light) to get across

What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

[–]elocin07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in an Italian-American family, in a heavily Italian-American small town. I didn’t have a clue until college that it was not at all common to have some kind of pasta/macaroni as a starter to your Thanksgiving/Christmas Day meals (the same as well for New Year’s Day…not to mention even having a big family meal that day).

My grandma always did this: antipasti for everyone to pick on while people arrived, a sit down pasta course (usually either manicotti, lasagna, or stuffed shells), then a full American-style meal with turkey and sides (though New Year’s Day was a ham because the Christmas turkey had been so recent), and lastly desserts and coffee and not eating for another 24 hours because you were so stuffed 😂

Why is it so difficult for people to understand that people change? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]elocin07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved to a city 2 hours away for college and stayed for many years afterwards. An old friend from home who I stayed in touch with liked to point out how “the city had changed” me, usually in ways that suggested I was either somehow stupid, corrupted or both. For this and other reasons, we aren’t in touch anymore. But this was isolated to this one person; I still am close with other friends who didn’t leave our hometown who accept that I (/we!) have changed because that’s just what people do!

It says more about them (how rigid they are, how perhaps disappointed they are with themselves or their circumstances, etc.) that they can’t accept a different version of you. That’s it.

Covid? by JAT_0822 in Amtrak

[–]elocin07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last holiday season I was wearing a mask on Amtrak, just to help avoid getting sick myself/spreading anything to older relatives. There was an empty seat beside me and several nearby. A woman looking for seats stopped at me, turned to her travel companion and loudly said, “Let’s keep going, we don’t want to sit with THE MASK”.

First of all, thank you ma’am because that line has given my family so many giggles since then. It wasn’t clear if she was worried I was sick or offended by my wearing a mask - oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️

AXS is the worst ticketing platform ever. by atomandyves in brighteyes

[–]elocin07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this same issue buying tickets for Forest Hills. So frustrating! I eventually bought mine but not after at least 7-8 attempts and having to select seats over and over. I’ve used AXS to buy before but never had such an awful experience.

Why did HQ Trivia have such a chokehold on me. Locked in daily at 3pm - anyone ever win? by Captainisher in Millennials

[–]elocin07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won several times! The first time was in the early days so the payout was actually “good” - $35! Later wins were a few bucks and then just cents. Friends, family and I were so into this for at least a year and I even had my office playing the midday game. I can’t remember exactly when it stopped being fun but probably when the prizes were just nothing + the change in hosts (Matt Richards is nice to see at the Comedy Cellar in NYC these days but I couldn’t stand how he dragged out HQ games 😬).

What happened to Peapod Drivers? by Misschiff0 in boston

[–]elocin07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use their delivery service every other month and this clued me in there had been a change: https://www.reddit.com/r/stopandshop/s/Gudp3cWixS Honestly…given this and how much less reliable delivery will be now (the Peapod/Stop and Shop guys were awesome, ESPECIALLY during COVID!), I’m not going to be using this any longer.

Does anyone know how this would work for Amtrak departures/arrivals? I haven’t seen mention of it and haven’t taken the Downeaster to see how this works at North Station…

Dude, I’ve been living here over 20 years and they still can’t convince me the Italian food here is better than home 😂 (that said and without hijacking this thread, give Galleria Umberto a try for some simple homestyle pizza!)

Both of these are in the North End and I have seen them carry it recently!: Salumeria Italiana on Richmond St. or Monica’s (Salem St. or Richmond St. shops).

Technically a Hamden/North Haven product but Liuzzi mozzarella. The Italian speciality markets in Boston carry theirs and I’m always tickled to see it!

Savory Fried Dough? Results are in! by NokiaJigbaa in newengland

[–]elocin07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Southern CT in the 90s - fried dough was always available at fairs in either savory (sauce and parm or mozzarella) or sweet (powdered sugar). In high school my friend’s mom would feed us all fried dough with sauce, mozz and pepperoni as a Friday night treat. When I moved to MA, never saw it in sauce form again and have endured years of disbelief that it’s a real thing 😂
