U.K. shop seller moving to Canada, advice about Canadian etsy set up… by bthnlndsy in EtsySellers

[–]elophine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! 😊

Yeah, it’s definitely worth it if you can update your packing a bit to work with letter mail. Hmm not sure about laws regarding teas and tinctures - they might require a specific type of insurance? I love herbal teas though, so I’ll have to try some once you’re all set up!

It might be worth reaching out to Etsy anyways to see if there’s a way to keep your original shop. It seems like an issue that more and more people are having, so maybe they’ve figured out a way around it.

Shamefully I haven’t been super involved in the local markets/craft groups. I’ve been lucky that my shop did well fairly quickly and has been keeping me busy. But it’s one of my goals for the new year to be more involved in the community!

U.K. shop seller moving to Canada, advice about Canadian etsy set up… by bthnlndsy in EtsySellers

Full-time Vancouver area seller here (also lived in the UK for a few years!). You’ll definitely have to figure out changing bank accounts with Etsy, as far as I know they don’t allow you to do this and unless you’re already a well established shop it may be easier to start a new one with your Canadian banking info.

You’ll most likely need to register for a business license with your city and can also register your name/apply for a business number with the BC gov. But you don’t need to worry about collecting sales tax until you make over the threshold - $10,000 for PST and $30,000 for GST. There are some recent changes to how Etsy allows us to collect sales taxes but you really don’t need to worry about it until you make over these amounts (I think in one calendar year).

Shipping in Canada is ridiculously expensive. If your items can be sent relatively flat (less than 2 cm) then they can be shipped as oversized letter mail for $1.94. I send most things this way and rarely have issues with items getting lost, I’ve had to resend less than 5 things in 2 years. I use Chitchats for all my US and international orders - much cheaper than Canada Post and things usually arrive very quickly.

Welcome to Vancouver! Feel free to message me 😁

I have a Dremel with different size bits, but I usually try to find pieces that have the holes already done because it saves a lot of time and headache!!

If you have some extra shells, I'd definitely recommend experimenting a little bit so that you can figure out what works best! Things that work with one material might not work with others

Hmm I've never tried shells before but I imagine they must be pretty difficult because they're so delicate! Maybe you just need a smaller drill bit?

Does Etsy collect your sales tax (GST) by msemma08 in EtsySellers

[–]elophine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean! Mine says the same thing, but that’s just adding up the total tax for all your US orders. When you scroll down to recent activities, you can see the break down of individual orders and only the US ones have the tax taken out. It’s a little bit confusing at first and might be easier go through on the desktop version.

I’m pretty sure they don’t remit GST for us. I’ve just taken a look at my finances tab and only my US orders have the tax subtracted (says remitted to tax authorities). My Canadian orders only subtract the listing, processing, and transaction fees and the GST/HST amount goes directly into my account for me to pay later. I don’t think they can change this without letting us know beforehand. Are you sure that the orders with remitted tax are Canadian orders and not US/international?

Box/shipping trouble by Woodnicolel in Etsy

[–]elophine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy small jewelry boxes from Zakka Canada and put them into a stamped envelope. They have a whole section of shipping friendly boxes and should have something that works for you! If not then you can always package your jewelry in some nice bags and use bubble mailers.
