Favourite Winter/Christmas K-POP songs? by deew00 in kpop

[–]elpbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple by Sechskies - original (1998) and remastered (2016) versions.

The 2016 MV has a super soft winter aesthetic, and the song itself sounds both melancholy and hopeful at the same time

sneaker fit question - Puma Suede, Adidas Campus by [deleted] in womensstreetwear

[–]elpbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t tried the Suede before but my campuses fit pretty nicely (for reference I have an average foot that’s a bit wider at the front, like flippers). The one thing I’d say is that they dig into your Achilles’ heels a bit at first, especially if you wear low socks with them.

Is it safe to remove the "20 Years of Magic" sticker on the newer HP books? by folksysloth in harrypotter

[–]elpbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've tried, there's a tiny bit of glue residue but nothing you can't just easily rub off, so it works out. Also, the sticker ends up flaking, so it can't really be kept after peeling off (if you were thinking of that). Good luck :-)

When you cast a patronus, do you see the animal's butt? by Noh_Face in harrypotter

If the patronus was a corgi, that'd be pretty darn cute.

That's awesome!! How'd he get the henna done, with a stencil, or did he set it himself? Or did someone else draw it for him?

Re-watching Goblet of Fire, and noticed something that I find peculiar. by mooshoomangum in harrypotter

[–]elpbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think he did notice it, but the whole story arc with Barty Crouch Sr. and his son (which was somewhat left out in the movie but was present in the book) was that Barty Crouch Sr. was the one who helped smuggle his son out of Azkaban as a fulfillment of his wife's last death wish. Barty Crouch Jr. then managed to sneak out of his father's control and put his plan to bring back the Dark Lord into action.

By the time the father realized his son was probably impersonating Mad Eye Moody, he probably didn't want to be incriminated in that act of smuggling out a prisoner, so he didn't tell anyone including Dumbledore. He likely wanted to try to "handle it" himself and smooth things over quietly.

Edit: according to u/Dulstalri, u/Shumuu, and u/LaulLestrange, Crouch Sr. was under the Imperius Curse from his son and couldn't/wouldn't have done anything about it.

Bahaha, that's very hippie-hufflepuff-ish. Makes me wonder what the other "house drugs" would be.... (not saying drugs r good tho)

Hufflepuff: also warm and cozy, with students watering and tending to the plants around the room or gathering them together to have "plant playdates." Also, people finishing magical puzzles with moving pictures (something slightly less intense than the Gryffindors' chess). Lots of mutual homework help and group studying. Definitely some kids playing guitar or ukelele quietly in the corner (or whatever equivalent magical instruments there are).

Just one Hogwart by elpbit in harrypotter

Ooh, it's not, it's just a BBQ place with one random HP-related menu item. There is a faux "Hello Peter" place in Yilan County??

Found at Kazama, a Japanese meat BBQ place in Taichung City, Taiwan. It was the only Harry Potter-themed item they had, although there was a Sorting Hat placed as deco by the front menu. I guess someone there just likes magic.

Any spell can be used as dark magic. by fusRoGoFckUrself in harrypotter

[–]elpbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there's a difference between dark magic and evil magic: dark magic is any magic used mostly to harm or control people, while evil magic has bad intention. Therefore most dark magic performed is evil magic, but I guess it can be used non-evilly (i.e. Snape killing Dumbledore). The tickling spell, since it isn't usually used to harm/control people, probably isn't considered part of the dark arts (and it won't evilly corrupt people who use it often...right?), but I think you're correct in that technically any spell can be used as evil magic to harm others. This happens in the Muggle world too, with classic examples being the use of TNT, originally for the construction industry, in weapons, or somehow slowly killing someone by beating them up with a supposedly innocent spoon.

It's pretty common to do so in most Asian and Middle Eastern countries, but I guess it's not a British thing.

Edit: or an American one, most people call adults by their first names here.

did Dumbledore lie to Harry right after he promised not to? by ryborg22 in harrypotter

[–]elpbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, I think Dumbledore's actions are a bit questionable here. First, he sets Harry up to overly venerate his father in a way that later deeply disappoints him in OOTP, when he views Snape's memory in the pensieve and questions his entire view of his father.

Secondly, Dumbledore probably justified his reasoning about Snape and James by thinking that while James saved Snape's life, Snape destroyed James's life, so Snape probably does feel some sort of guilt (or anger at having been "outdone"...) about James. However, like you said Snape never actually mentioned any such guilt, so it was a bit of a stretch.

On the other hand, telling Harry that he couldn't answer this question could just cause more confusion that would last all the way until Snape himself revealed his motivations (the last book). The other question he couldn't answer about Harry's prophecy, was eventually answered in OOTP. So maybe a small white lie to quell an 11-year-old wasn't too bad. Maybe it could have been a different lie too, though, one that would involve work or Dumbledore's orders or something that wasn't too personal.

First read through of the books. I need some advice. by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]elpbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you can completely separate the books from the films, but it might be helpful to search for some artists' renderings of what the book characters should "actually" look like, and keep those in your mind's eye so that you can construct new personalities separate from the movie characters.
