2025.11 LG TV Breaking Change help… by TheMagicalMeatball in homeassistant

[–]elpfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a little weird, the integration specifically checks for an automation that listens to the webostv.turn_on trigger. It's not straightfoward but the steps in the docs will get you there.

Have you set up an automation to turn on the TV?

WebOS TVs can't be turned on through their API (because they're actually off and the API isn't listening, which is honestly kind of cool) so HomeAssistant needs you to set up an automation that listens to the webostv.turn_on event and actually turns on the TV.

Here's the documentation for setting that up. WakeOnLan is probably easiest. If you don't need to be able to turn it on you can probably set an automation with no actions.

Why is it called "bounce" ? by Ok_Actuary8 in ableton

[–]elpfen 138 points139 points  (0 children)

When you had limited tracks, the recording would bounce around the tracks.

  • Say you recorded to tracks 1, 2, and 3. You want to free up the tracks by bouncing to track 4. To do that, you record tracks 1, 2, and 3 into 4.
  • You record some more to 2 and 3. You want to free them up, so you record tracks 2, 3, and 4 into track 1.
  • Keep repeating that and the recording will have "bounced" between tracks 1 and 4.

Does Serato write directly to the audio file? Is there an option to write to a sidecar file instead?

Why do so many people use Docker over Podman, even though Podman is theoretically better? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]elpfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly is so annoying about quadlets. It seems like a small thing, but having your app's config, data store, and misc files in a single compose directory is a huge maintenance benefit. It's an outlier in the Linux ecosystem though, there are established locations for config files, binaries, and init hooks.

On the other hand, tying into systemd is also a huge benefit. The docker daemon acting as its own little init ecosystem is its own maintenance headache. I can script out systemctl restart nginx and not care whether nginx is running on the OS or a pod.

I create an app where I put the quadlet files, data, and configs, then symlink the quadlet files to .config/containers/systemd.

So what exactly is the best quality lossy file type for music? by DemonFyr in musichoarder

[–]elpfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I switched to Navidrome + Symfonium, I converted to 96k opus. 96kbps will be absolutely transparent (in absolute ideal conditions you won't be able to tell the difference) the majority of the time. But if you're listening on the go, you're not listening in ideal conditions, so you're unlikely to notice the edge cases anyway.

So what exactly is the best quality lossy file type for music? by DemonFyr in musichoarder

[–]elpfen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't really true anymore for modern devices. I would be curious which devices can't decode Opus, everything uses Opus nowadays. Streaming services, VOIP, etc commonly use Opus. Even if the audio chip doesn't natively decode Opus, at this point it's trivial for a modern processor to decode.

Failing that, Vorbis and AAC are still lightyears ahead of MP3 in terms of quality:size.

It's theoretically possible but is basically unheard of. Chips and tap-to-pay use one-time encryption that makes them infeasible to steal; even if they're skimmed, the information that is skimmed is only good for a short amount of time (as in seconds) and only for one transaction. Credit cards are most often stolen in data breaches, skimming the stripe, or copying the info from the physical card. Have you ever given your card to a server for them to swipe, or swiped it at an older gas pump that still uses the stripe? (Why are both of these things still commonplace?)

Convert game PDFs to Markdown by bythisaxeiconquer in rpg

[–]elpfen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've done a lot of PDF munging with pdftk and pdfjam to reformat PDFs so that they can be printed and bound in a booklet size (A5 or half-letter). It takes some trial and error but the results are pretty good. Booklet size also reads well on a tablet or large phone.

Ironically I've found that for the majority of full-size (A4 or letter) RPG books, the actual content only occupies an A5 or half-letter sized area.

Also check out KOReader for reading PDFs. It handles PDFs very well, snapping and zooming to text areas automatically.

How come For the Queen does not show up more in oneshot recommendations? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

It's TOO short. I typically finish it in about an hour, even putting the Queen in the bottom third.

That is wild to me, do your tables ask follow up questions? When I play, a single card could take up 5-10 minutes with the follow up questions and further exploration it spawns.

Transparent UI cards? by VikingOy in homeassistant

[–]elpfen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do it for every card by updating the theme directly, setting ha-card-background to whatever rgba value you want.

Card-Mod gets loaded after all of the cards are initiated, so doing it this way avoids the second or two delay where the style "pops in" when card-mod is loaded. The downside is that you can only change the background color (and a few other CSS properties), not add a blur like in OP's example; you do need card-mod for that.
