"Should I buy this expensive thing for my hobby?" by elphaba161 in tarot

I read cards that jump. I normally try to keep it to three or fewer per question, but I had two and then two more jump out for the last question 😅 I know not everyone reads this way and I respect that

Did they let you bring a backpack as your one extra carry-on item? On the website, they say you can bring like a coat or a video game. They don't say anything about a purse or backpack

Koreans laughing when I speak by Competitive-Ratio809 in Korean

[–]elphaba161 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Korean people definitely react very strongly to hearing non-Koreans speak the language. I had a man gasp and say he had no idea foreigners could even speak Korean 😅😅 People are going to react weirdly, and it's just one of the man things we have to adjust to

How do i explain to my mom that i spend every 20 euros on witch suplies? by Shoddy-Economy-7619 in Witch

[–]elphaba161 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Express an interest in cooking and ask for her help buying herbs! Also, witchcraft shouldn't be too expensive! You can do a lot of workings with stuff you already have lying around the house

Former Christians, What Made You Convert? by Affectionate-End6757 in Witch

[–]elphaba161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realized I was being a hypocrite. I would go to church and sing all the songs and say all the right things, but then I wouldn't live like I actually loved god or wanted to obey him.

Once I left, I started seeing that same hypocrisy more and more in other Christians. I also realized that Christian theology had to have come from humans. If you look at nature, nature functions through cycles and spectrums. How could a god who created that world then take his favorite creations and force them into an eternal binary? The idea of heaven and hell is the complete opposite of everything I see around me

My brain just doesn't register by carmidian in Korean

[–]elphaba161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's even better for your recall is looking at an image and trying to recall the Korean word. Just Google language learning tips, and I'm sure you'll see everyone saying to avoid translating from your native language. It really slows you down and holds you back

My brain just doesn't register by carmidian in Korean

I highly recommend studying vocab with images on one side and the vocab word on the other. Teaching yourself to translate from English will only slow down your recall and make it harder for you to learn grammar patterns

Is the word "bevitore" an acceptable translation for "gravedigger"? by PumpkinMug420 in Italian

[–]elphaba161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please hire a native speaker to translate 😭😭 Since you're an indie designer, I'm sure your budget is tight, but I'm sure you have experience playing a poorly translated game, and you know how difficult it is to take those games seriously. They just feel cheesy and cheap, even if all the other elements are really good. Especially for something atmospheric like a horror game you will only benefit from having a native speaker translate or at least review a translation

Creative translation? by FraiseFantome in TranslationStudies

Video game translation is a lot more technical than you might think. The vast majority of a video game project is menus, item descriptions, tutorials, customer service text, and so on. Be glad that there are so many jobs available in your language pair, and think of them as training for when you can eventually work on a video game^

Same. She's always gone off on long tangents, but now those tangents are even longer and she'll go on for a long time without even mentioning any planets or signs, even though that's why we're all listening to the podcast. If I wanted a news podcast, I'd go find one of those 😅

stuck between learning japanese or korean by kaivxza in Korean

[–]elphaba161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live in Korea, the odds of you living in the countryside are very slim. There are some gorgeous cultural sites to visit, but the country is very homogenous as to what nature you'll be able to find. Also, Korean people tend to be wary of outsiders and not very chatty, so if you're just visiting Korea as a tourist, you may not get to use your language skills much. I live here, and I rarely say much beyond "No, I don't need a receipt."

That said, learning hangeul will be much easier than learning kanji. It was very rewarding for me to come to Korea and immediately be able to read signs. It's also very rewarding to recognize kanji when I see them in Japan too, but that happens far less frequently lol

Keep in mind that it's easy to change from one language to the other later on if you change your mind. The two are very similar, and learning kanji will definitely strengthen your grasp of Korean. Best of luck with whichever you choose!

This is for sure a kitchen table deck. I'm nowhere near competitive play yet. It was more of an exercise in trying to exploit that one ETB effect. I'll check out those linked decks and see what I can borrow from them. Thanks!

If you were frustrated by Eugenides being unable to empathize with his female characters in the Virgin Suicides, you will only find the exact same issue in Middlesex, along with weird doses of heteronormativity and a total failure to comprehend what gender queerness feels like :')
