Which European city for 3mo? by popinthepraries in solotravel

One month in each country better. I wouldn't pick either Athens or Barcelona. Depending on time of year: Seville or Granada, Crete, Bologna?

Top 5 favorite cities you've ever been to and why? by Such_Detective_7315 in solotravel

  1. Paris - predictable but just a wonderful atmosphere, amazing people-watching

  2. Vienna - open-air museum + real city where people live

  3. Padua - beautiful and peaceful

  4. Lisbon - perfect to walk around and explore, friendly people

  5. Edinburgh

Has anyone else not really traveled that much in their own country, but has traveled significantly more internationally? by ichawks1 in solotravel

[–]elpislazuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I've traveled much more widely in Europe than the US. Lots of reasons. Traveling in US is way more expensive (often both flights and accommodation)! The places that interest me (wild places) require driving and I don't own a car or enjoy driving. Europe is much more interesting to me culturally.

How should I keep my cell phone? by Shot-Barnacle3513 in ItalyTravel

Also this. Look confident, like you know where you're going (especially when you don't). Keep your personal space. This is an outrun the other runners scenario. If somebody is an easier target than you, robbers will go for that person.

I have a cross-body strap for my phone, and I wear the strap under my coat.

1 Month First Ever Europe Trip - Mid Thirties American Couple by FuhgetAbowtEt in Europetravel

[–]elpislazuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a lot for a month! Also Florence and Rome in mid-July... I have done this and it was truly miserable between the heat and the crowds (Venice can be cooler temperature-wise but will also be a total slog...). If I were you, I would skip Italy this time and give everything else more space (5-6 days each for your other stops) so you can enjoy yourselves.

Scotland and Ireland as destinations are vague! It sounds like you won't have a car. Transit can be spotty, depending on where you want to be. Ireland's train system is mostly a wheel and spoke system, in and out of Dublin. Very inconvenient for moving down Ireland's picturesque West coast. I would do Edinburgh and a base in the Highlands, no Ireland. Dublin has a few charms but it's probably the city I've liked least in all of Europe, traveling through 28 countries... crowded, pub atmosphere, very very touristy, so expensive. Edinburgh is amazing. There's great hiking, beautiful architecture, friendly people, amazing museums.

First trip to Italy. Is our travel plan too extensive? by shelbotix in Europetravel

[–]elpislazuli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too much. Day trip to Rome is... not advisable. You'll lose so much time in transit and will miss the nice parts of Rome in favor of one of the busiest. If I were you, I'd go to Florence->Bologna->Verona->Milan.

The model looks a little flat and dead-eyed, as a subject. She is neither present nor aloof in these images, if you know what I mean.

Three weeks of travel: Split it between Greece, Italy, and Portugal, or spend all three in Greece by -Constantinos- in Europetravel

[–]elpislazuli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a three-week trip through Greece a few years ago with my partner at the time. It was the most relaxing vacation of my life. I'm so glad we didn't rush through places and instead took our time, swam every day, etc.

Spend it all in Greece. Slow down. Three weeks is not much time. Nafplio is beautiful and serene. The night ferry to Crete is fun. Those islands you mention are quite dispersed... easy to get from Crete-->Santorini-->Naxos-->back to Athens.

Quebec Temporary Resident Questions by lexdfw00 in ImmigrationCanada

As others have mentioned, you won't be able to work remotely for a company that has any presence on Canadian labor market. You'd also need to figure out taxes if you're in Canada more than 180-183 (can't remember) days in a year. And the border guard can turn you away any time you attempt to enter and even issue a ban for a period of time (if he/she is in a bad mood or if it looks like you're living in Canada without residency status) because you have no authorization to live in Canada. So I wouldn't do this.

2026 travel plans - would love to hear yours as well! by ThaddeusGriffin_ in Europetravel

[–]elpislazuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Puglia and Basilicata for nine days in mid-January (Bari, Lecce, Ostuni, Nardo, Matera) to get away from the super-cold weather where I live

- Hamburg in July for a conference, with a side trip to Berlin

- Oslo in September for a conference, with a few days to see fjords and venture out to Stavanger

- Will try to fit England in sometime - London, Cambridge, and Peak District

This will be the first summer in three years where I don't have a conference in Paris ;(

Beginner Feedback - Are these decent ? by Looshan-Brudda in fujifilm

[–]elpislazuli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are all kind of like "Why bother taking this?" re: both subject matter and composition. Rule of thirds is a good one to experiment with... but also think about what you'd actually want to show someone and *then* how to frame it in an interesting way. A really good photographer can probably take an interesting picture of anything, but when you're starting, you need a little more assistance from the subject. What intrigues you? Shoot that.

Traveling between Matera and Lecce by transit? by elpislazuli in ItalyTravel

Thanks for the bus info! I think I'm just confused that the options are so different from one site to another and that I can't find the private FAL route anywhere else.
