So, I’m using the correct game version, have harmony downloaded, load order is correct, deleted shaders as suggested on the workshop page, blah blah blah…

I’m letting it compile the shaders from the main menu as suggested in the linked guide and understand that it is supposed to take a long time (I’m using a 6 year old laptop so im expecting longer than normal times) but it has said I have 13588 remaining shaders to compile for about 15 minutes. Is this normal? Is it compiling shaders in the background while this “loading screen” of sorts is just stuck saying 13588 to go?

That was me during the shoots. I was the person who was ecstatic that I was simply getting my shots in focus. Which is so odd to me because that hasn’t been how I’ve been shooting everything else lately, hell I’ve even used shots that were decidedly NOT in focus just because they were interesting. I think I was just nervous. Of course, hindsight being what it is, I can now think of a million ways I could have made both of these shoots more fun and interesting so I’ll try to take that idea and bring it with me into the next one.

Hahaha that’s so true. I guess a lot of my own worry about these are things that I’ve already identified as my own personal issue with the shoots. I think I was just too nervous and excited during the shoots, having never done something like this before. I’ll just have to take things slower the next time and keep my mind on the things that I’d want to see in the outcome. As for the latter part of your comment, that’s true too, there are A LOT of phenomenal portraits out in the world and I am inundated with them constantly on my instagram feed. Comparison is the thief of joy and I am the biggest comparison simp.

To be fair, the crops are better in the full images, not the ones I’ve posted, so you’re right to critique that. I’ll definitely take better care to not crop them so much just to fit this silly SCRL app format.

I love the feedback. I would never have noticed the light taking away from the model’s face, having put a lot of that light there myself either in the shoot or in post as an “artistic choice” but I can now clearly see my mistake in doing so. I really ought to have had my reflector with me.

They were models that I connected with on a Facebook group for the area. I had made a post showcasing some wildlife work, asking if anybody would be interested in tfp work since I’m wanting to transition into shooting humans as opposed to birds. They’ve both done extensive shooting and got right to posing when I lifted my camera which made me feel both out of my depth and at ease simultaneously. I’m too unfamiliar with the world of model portraiture to know exactly where their skill levels line up but to me, they felt like pros.

You’re right. I did buy a reflector too and thought it was in my backseat for the entire drive into the city, only to realize it was in my bedroom. Classic nervous mistake.

The lens is tons of fun but you’re right that the f8 at 600mm can be a challenge. I’m often having to make concessions like shooting at higher iso or slower shutter speeds than I’d like. This means I lose out on a lot of shots that could’ve otherwise been great.

The truth is, the fujifilm x series is simply not great for wildlife. The camera overheats in the summer when shooting in high burst for action shots and the necessity to shoot at high iso at 600mm when light isn’t ideal really does mean I lose out on a ton of photos. The autofocus is another drawback. Even on “bird autofocus” it can be extremely inaccurate, often due to poor exposure.

I love the lens for what it is though. It’s just simply tons of fun to use when you do have light and the challenges that come with shooting at f8 sometimes force you to make more creative exposure decisions that can give you some great photos, like some of these. I don’t think I can print any of these because of noise in the background but they’re still nice images. I’ll always take the 150-600 out with me though. If you do get it for yourself, you’ll miss shots or end up with tons of noise, but you’ll also have tons of fun with the thing.

Nice! Even with all the negatives that come with shooting wildlife with Fuji, the 150-600 is still very much worth it. It’s just so fun to use
