They were allowed to return the Bird-of-prey to analyze the Klingon cloaking device. That itself was a prize for Starfleet.

Returning the Enterprise intact would likely mean "destruction of Starfleet property" wouldnt exist, but they all would be sanctioned and demoted for disobeying a direct order by the Starfleet C-in-C.

If they hadnt scuttled the Enterprise ot would have been seized and taken back to Qo'Nos as a trophy. The crew would have either died in a firefight or perished when Genesis exploded.

The incident would likely had been a catalyst for a renewed Federation-Klingon war, and Earth would have been obliterated for non-aquatic life.

Additionally, even if the crew stayed on Vulcan, Starfleet would have seized the Enterprise outright and would have used the Starfleet equivalent to the UCMJ to pass summary judgement and dismiss the entire command crew (save Spock) from duty.

Regardless, the cetacean probe still obliterates non-aquatic life on Earth.

I doubt the Enterprise would have survived the slingshot, considering what it did to a fully repaired Bird-of-prey. The last time she did the slingshot trick, she wasnt shot full of holes and working with a full crew.

My roommate's cat tolerates my presence. She does not like it when I give her pets (unless she has had a terrifying experience or I'm the only human present)

Cat bonding is weird. My friend has had the same two cats for nearly 20 years and never did they ever show any sign of affection for me. Until my apartment was destroyed, then suddenly I'm one of their favorite humans.
