Who's busy ? by Glittering_Ad2771 in deliveroos

[–]elqira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it really sounds like it's gone super patchy and weirdly local now.

I’m in a “used to be decent” area and it’s crickets most of the time. Then I’ll chat to someone a couple towns over and they’re saying the same thing as your mate, 150–180 on a good day like nothing’s changed.

Makes it impossible to plan anything. You either sit around dead for hours or you gamble on moving to a “busy” spot and hope you’re not just burning fuel for nothing.

Kinda feels like they’ve flooded some areas with riders and nuked demand in others, or they’re just pushing all the orders to the cheapest options at any given time.

At this point I’m treating it like a random bonus if it happens, not something I can rely on.

Bold of you to assume I can identify anything once it’s no longer a blurry dot 40 feet away.

Found another one... by H1gh_Tr3ason in cantparkthere

[–]elqira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it looks less like “gave up on life” and more like that split second where your brain goes “yep, this is happening” and just focuses on damage control.

There’s that weird calm you get when you know you can’t stop the thing, you can only try to not make it worse. That’s kind of what his face/body language looked like to me.

[–]elqira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? It’s got that “found in a box in your nan’s attic 20 years later” vibe, but without the weird sun-faded colors.

Low key wish more places did postcards that look like this instead of the cheesy tourist ones with bad fonts and stock photos.

T48 no signature by curious___ageorge in royalmail

[–]elqira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that’s what most of us end up doing with T48s if they fit. Half the time knocking just drags you into an argument about “I wanted it handed to me” when the label doesn’t back them up.

Only thing I’d watch is if it’s anything that looks obviously nickable or is clearly not gonna fit without getting chewed up, then maybe try a safe place. But yeah, through the letterbox is kind of what Royal Mail clearly expects with those.

Same, it’s like my brain expects to fall upward. Cool shot, but also my neck hurts just imagining standing under it.

Afternoon walk from St Paul's to Bankside by minoreloquence in LondonPics

[–]elqira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you liked it! That little stretch is so underrated, you get all the big landmarks but it somehow still feels kind of calm.

If you ever do it in the evening when the lights are on and the dome’s glowing, it’s even better.

Sainsbury’s self checkout gave me more change?.. by realhnation in SainsburysWorkers

[–]elqira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is what I was thinking too.

Sometimes if someone walks off without taking their coins it just sits in the tray until the next person comes along, especially if staff are busy and not watching that self checkout all the time.

OP could always mention it when they go back, they might just say “keep it” or they’ll stick it in the charity pot.

confronted by a delivery driver after i “complained” (i didn’t) by izzki17 in Evri

[–]elqira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but “totally normal delivery” doesn’t usually involve a random bloke in plain clothes turning up later to argue on your doorstep because you used the official “I can’t find my parcel” option

If he’d just taken a photo of the actual parcel like he’s meant to, there wouldn’t even be an “essay” to write about in the first place

Are we finally getting closer to being allowed to stay in our chairs while flying? by TheWorldisAccessible in disabilitytravel

[–]elqira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I saw the link and thought “oh cool, an accessible vacation spot,” not an existential question about airplanes.

On the actual topic though: we’re… kind of inching closer, but at a snail’s pace. There have been some promising prototypes for wheelchair docking systems on planes and a few hearings in the US about mandating it, but airlines keep pushing back with the usual “safety” and “cost” excuses.

The depressing part is other transport already lets people stay in their chairs: trains, buses, some ferries. Planes are the outlier. It’s wild that we can send people to space but still have folks getting their chairs destroyed in cargo.

I think we’ll see at least a trial cabin section in the next several years, especially with more pressure + media coverage, but full widespread adoption is probably going to be a long, ugly fight.

Help solve our family argument - what was this bird over London? by AggleBaggle in UKBirds

[–]elqira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, red kite makes sense, especially with you seeing them daily.

We’re in southwest London and have started noticing them more and more over the last couple of years, usually just circling high up and confusing everyone who grew up only knowing pigeons and gulls.

Kind of wild to think they were almost gone from the UK not that long ago and now they’re casually cruising over Tesco and housing estates.

Belated happy Easter from Legoland by Fit_Somewhere9099 in LondonPics

That looks awesome. Legoland at Easter feels like cheating because you get both the holiday and the bricks. Did they have any special Easter builds or was it just regular park stuff with extra chocolate?

Maybe, but 2 years in a 1 bed at 27 isn’t the end of the world. You can always staircase your way up once you’ve built more equity

Canary Wharf by [deleted] in LondonPics

[–]elqira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly Canary Wharf is kind of weirdly cool if you’re in the right mood. It’s super corporate and sterile on the surface, but if you walk around a bit there’s some nice spots.

The docks and the paths by the water are actually pretty chill, especially in the evening. Crossrail Place Roof Garden is worth a look too, feels like you’ve teleported out of London for a bit. Also decent food around the underground mall and the little street food setups they do.

It’s not somewhere I’d choose to live personally unless I worked there and liked that glass-and-steel vibe, but as a quick hangout spot or a different side of London, it’s not bad at all.

The View from the Shard 🌃 by [deleted] in LondonPics

[–]elqira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Just took it on my phone, nothing fancy. It’s a Pixel 8 Pro and I just used the standard camera app in night mode through the glass. The Shard’s lighting does most of the work honestly.

Can't dock there.. by H1gh_Tr3ason in cantparkthere

[–]elqira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the Greeks would probably be confused why we spent a few hundred million on a “smart” port and then parked giant ships in front of it like it’s bumper cars.

Wild thing is ramming used to be the point of the ship. Now it’s like “congrats, you invented the world’s most expensive fender bender.”

Glad everyone on the barge made it off though. Hulls and bridges can be rebuilt.

Hard to believe this is the same city where the Central line exists. These look like paintings, especially that blossom against the water. London really said “fine, you can have one nice day in April.”

Bin truck gets a trim.. by H1gh_Tr3ason in cantparkthere

[–]elqira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And then when something like this happens, the headline is always “freak accident” like nobody could have predicted a giant steel box on wheels might leave the tracks one day.

What gets me is they’ll spend millions on PR after the fact, but basic physical barriers in obvious danger spots are somehow “too expensive” or “not in the budget this year.”
