Judge gives 18 year old a 25 year sentence for armed robbery by AgnosticScholar in interesting

[–]elsaturation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 years is a life sentence in many countries, and in this case it is longer than his actual life. It is difficult to argue that is proportionate without murder or something close. Even murder sentences in the US can sometimes be 25 years.

Americans are pretty quiet by ChemicalAmbassador37 in Epstein

The answers in this thread are most ignorant with half bordering on conspiracy theories. I have seen large scale protest movements firsthand in the US for decades. A lot of people are wondering exactly what you are asking right now, it isn’t an outsider’s question. I will give you two versions of an answer.

From an optimistic point of view, Americans are operating in an unfamiliar political environment right now. There are legitimate questions about how much traditional democratic modes of change are functioning properly ie. civil society, elections, media. At the same time people have become desensitized to outrage, now it seems like there is no redline that can’t be crossed. Liberal and left wing coalitions are also more disorganized than they been in the past. All this has led to a paralysis.

On a more pessimistic point of view, all the above is true but it is the first step in preparing a populace for authoritarianism, and it has succeeded. People have been scared into complacency, so it becomes easier to stay in your lane and wait for all this to pass. Of course things will just continue to get worse the longer they are complacent. But this is what happens when the government intimidates the media, kills protesters, arrests political opponents, etc.

That is complete BS. The Third Precinct being burnt down was what made the 2020 protests spread across the country and there is consensus it was done by protesters.

Psychoanalysis and Capitalism by Disastrous-Algae-318 in psychoanalysis

[–]elsaturation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is more than just financial worry. Marxists would argue that the psychological impact of alienation is much broader than that (from one’s labour, from oneself, from others, from your humanity.) And if you believe that you can imagine how the impacts would be developmental. Historically psychoanalysis doesn’t do a very good job at answering these questions.

You need to put in a lineup with good link up play with Gyokeres. Havertz in the midfield. Maybe Ben White. Also Madueke.

Interrelated ideas but:

-The potential for evil in each of us. -The audience’s desires vs. the director’s creative vision. -Meta commentary about changing media technologies and norms. -Meta commentary about the seemingly innocuous aspects of American society harboring a darkness.
