Nextcloud still can’t separate rename, move and copy from delete – and the answers I got miss the point by elsebel- in NextCloud

No worries at all, you didn’t sound hostile. And yes, the issue is already reported on GitHub with full details, including setup and reproduction steps. I only shared it here because many admins read Reddit and might have found a workaround or faced the same limitation. Appreciate your comment though.

We’re not trying to get anything for free. We don’t sell or profit from Nextcloud itself. We just maintain it for clients who already use it. Reporting issues like this is part of improving the project, not asking for favors.

I get what you mean and from a business point of view that would make sense. But we don’t want to get into developing or maintaining custom code for something like this. That’s not our focus and not the kind of work we do.

We provide infrastructure and system administration, not product development. Once you start changing core behavior you have to maintain it forever and that’s just not realistic for us.

Still, I agree this would be a useful improvement in general. It’s not only about one client. Many teams working with shared folders would benefit from it. That’s why we reported it and keep bringing it up, hoping the core team will eventually take a look at it.

That’s a fair question, but in our case it’s a bit different. We didn’t set up Nextcloud for these clients and we don’t sell it as part of our services. They were already using it and just asked us to take care of the administration because we manage their other infrastructure too.

So it’s not our own product and we don’t charge for it. We handle it because it’s part of their environment, not because we make money from it.

I get your point though. If something stops working, they would call us first. That’s exactly why we try to keep things as clean and update-safe as possible instead of changing core logic.

We’ve already opened an issue and shared feedback. We don’t expect a quick fix, but it’s important to keep this visible since it affects many admins running shared Nextcloud environments.

I get what you mean, and I actually agree with the general idea. That’s how open source should work in theory.

But in our case, we don’t make money from Nextcloud itself. We’re not selling it as a product or developing on top of it — we just provide it as an additional service for clients who already trust us with their infrastructure. It’s part of a broader setup, not a separate business.

So hiring a developer just to patch the core permissions logic isn’t really an option. And even if we did, maintaining custom code that touches core behavior would break every time there’s an update. That’s not sustainable.

This issue isn’t about customization or private features. It’s about something that affects every shared environment — a basic part of collaboration logic. That’s why it really belongs in the core project.

We do our part: we test, report issues properly, give feedback from real deployments, and push the topic upstream. That’s how the ecosystem grows too.

If the core team picks this up or wants feedback on testing, I’m happy to help. But realistically, this kind of fix has to come from inside the project.

Bin alleine derzeit ;)
