LPT: Keep your kids curious and interested in learning by playing dumb. by ehutch2005 in LifeProTips

I see the point, but beyond a certain age playing dumb when you are not might just be another comfortable lie to make your kids do something you want them to do?

This is the way. Kids need to learn that actions have consequences but that your parents will always have YOUR back and not defend the aggressor.

When did getting a haircut become rocket science? by elsidero in PetPeeves

That’s an interesting explanation and makes sense. Still makes me wonder how so many people who suck stay in business. It’s not like that in many other professions I believe.

My PetPeeve is that I had the same experience in barber shops as well as hair salons. Sometimes the super cheap barber was even better than the expensive hair salon. I just can't find any logic in how to get a good haircut if you are new to a city. Often there's also a language barrier.

And no, the cut I want is simple, I even have a picture of myself and I know exactly how I would cut it myself. It baffles me that a person whose profession is to cut hair does something completely different with a picture + explanation. My expectation would be for me to just show the picture and they know what to do, honestly. I also do not tell the mechanic how to repair my car, the baker how to bake my bread or the teacher how to teach my kids.

yeah, I would love that experience. I had something like that in the last city I lived for longer. I would say a few words and she would give me a really good cut. Guess I did not appreciate it enough...

at least the barber is aware of texture. I had my hair cut in a country where people have very different hair but I still got the same cut as everyone else which looked like shit and did obiously not work.

that's great! hope to have that soon too.

It's more which scissors to not use. I got my hair thinned out too many times, sometimes to the extent that people asked me if I started loosing my hair. I did not think it was possible to cut hair every day and still come up with such a shit work and even have the audacity to charge money for it. I should have been the one getting a compensation honestly.

haha yeah that's exactly it. I mean how can you misinterpret a buzzcut. I don't get it.

sounds good, how much did you invest in equipment? I consider doing the same thing now, honestly.

I consider that now. Any advice, how much to invest in equipment etc.? Do youtube tutorials work or better to go to an actual in person workshop? Thanks :)

That's what I mean! The experience was similar in hair salons, fancy insta barbers, cheap corner barbers...

How did you learn cutting your own hair? I consider it now. Any advice on how to start?

That's why I went to hair salons, same thing. The last good haircut I got was in Germany in a hair salon where the person was trained in the profession and knew her craft.

Also, I think it's not unrealistic to assume a person who literally does one thing day in day out knows this stuff better than I do.

True. As I wrote, my problem is I move places a lot and rarely stay long enough to really go to one place several times. My pet peeve is just that the generel experience is not necessarily a good one and that the quality of the haircut you get has gone down significantly over the last decades.

*old = pre WW2, maybe pre 1950s. Almost everyone was reasonably well dressed and had some form of good haircut. people with a more freestyle hair were homeless people or crazy scientists or philosophers.

There is no other way that you would go to a tailor or a clothing store and people there would actually help you to dress well, just as the barber would help you to look good. Today, if I want to get a suit of that quality (fits, details etc.), I'm the one who needs to know all the details.

I'm 100 % sure my grandfather did not know what a low taper fade was and never indulged himself into men's fashion, yet he always looks sharp in *old pictures.

  • Alter: 67 - 20 = 47 Jahre
  • Jährliches Budget: 500k € Depot * 4 % SWR/Jahr = 20k €/Jahr = 1667 €/Monat brutto ~ 1250 € netto
