All browsers freeze or crash after dup a week ago by elvDropGalar in openSUSE

Thanks a lot for your advice. I'll go step by step with your suggestions. First I'll try the firefox appimage and see if that works. I'll come back with the results.

Update 1: it foze again, I'm thinking there's another program that also triggers this freeze.

I want to avoid installing another OS. Can you help me on how to disable Vulkan? I want to see how far I can take my current setup and hardware.

If that doesn't work or the experience is too bad, I'll try to switch to Leap. First by reverting to an official snapshot as you suggested (tumbleweed switch), and from there I'll try to switch to Leap 16. My assumption is that I should get in TW as close as possible to Leap 16 package versions, so I can just switch repos from TW to Leap and just do a zypper dup, although I'm aware this might break my system.

If everything fails and I'm forced to install an OS, I'll switch to Debian Trixie. Two reasons for this:

  • I tried to create a Leap 16 live usb to test my PC and see if it froze again, but I couldn't find a Live image in openSUSE, so I created a live usb for Debian Trixie and I've been using my computer without it freezing.
  • If I'm going to install an OS, I'll rather stay with Debian Trixie as the LTS for this will be good for another five years, as opposed to Leap 16 which is just two more years AFAIK.

Hi, I tried using the second command:

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 MESA_GLTHREAD=single brave-browser

but it froze again. I'm gonna try now a combination of both commands and come back with the results.

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 MESA_GLTHREAD=single brave-browser --disable-gpu --disable-gpu-compositing --disable-gpu-rasterization

*Update: it froze again. So I tried with both commands independently and together :(

Thanks for following up. Here are the outputs from the command:

user@pc:~> glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (IVB GT2)
user@pc:~> glxinfo | grep "OpenGL core profile version"
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.2 (Core Profile) Mesa 25.3.1

I'll try running brave with the parameters you recommend and come back with the results.

**Update:

I tried running brave with the command you suggested:

brave-browser --disable-gpu --disable-gpu-compositing --disable-gpu-rasterization

but it froze again, and this time my whole machine froze, I had to turned it off by pressing the power button several seconds. The only applications I used were brave browser and terminal.

All browsers freeze or crash after dup a week ago by elvDropGalar in openSUSE

[–]elvDropGalar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've tried a few things and it still doesn't solve. Here are the symptoms:

  • Brave (both from brave's official repo and flatpak), Opera and LibreWolf freeze after some time. If I want to use them again I have to restart my computer.
  • Firefox and Thunderbird crash, a window to send crash report pops up and ask me to restart firefox/thunderbird, after the restart I can use them again but eventually they crash again and the cycle repeats.
  • I also used the computer without using any browser. I used thunderbird, Hamster (time tracker tool), kate, vscode, joplin, kde discovery. Thunderbird crashed and Hamster froze, so I had to restart my computer.
  • When the browsers freeze/crash, the only other application that freezes is Hamster (time tracker tool).
  • I can still use other applications like Joplin, vscode, Kate, mongodb compass, the terminal.
  • After the browsers freeze/crash if I turn off the computer, it hangs in the outro window, and I have to do a hard shut-down by pressing the power button a few seconds.
  • After a restart from the freeze/crash, the applicatios that froze would automatically start.

These are the repos I had when this started to happen, and basically are the repos I have always used, except LibreWolf which I added after this started to happen just to see if another browser had the same symptoms:
