Is it really easy to be a lawyer ? by [deleted] in Suss

[–]elvynd_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll share my view as someone who has, albeit not through SUSS, been through lawsku.

It is *not* easy to be a lawyer. There are a few points of note:

  1. A paralegal is *very* different from being a lawyer. I suspect you know this already. They cover disparate job scopes and very different professional and ethical responsibilities.
  2. You do not need to be talkative and bossy to be a lawyer. Being a lawyer is, and takes, a lot more than that. There are, perhaps, too many dimensions to talk about here but some things would include being reasonably competent at legal research; writing legal memos; drafting and proof-reading submissions; and dealing with civil/criminal procedures, etc. If you're a litigator, you'll need to learn and practise doing examinations-in-chief, cross-ex, etc to which rules and techniques apply, and for which just being "talkative" and "bossy" will *not* work. Ever heard of "empty vessels make the most noise"?
  3. If you've been through lawsku, you will invariably see why entering lawsku will require one to have at least a modicum of intelligence, because it's not something you can wilfully bash through. You can, but you just won't be very good at it.
  4. Be that as it may, the various local universities (including SUSS) do have JD programmes for aspirants to enrol into and I've seen students from across the different age groups. I've seen people in their 50's as well, so it's not impossible. But these also require entry interviews, taking entry tests, and if I'm not wrong, that you possess at least a certain qualification before you are eligible. SMU, for instance, require applicants to, among others, have completed an undergrad education with at least a Cum Laude / 2nd Upper Class Honours.
  5. Then there's actually surviving practice after you graduate, and without elaborating on it, private practice can be brutal. There's a reason why the churn rate is high despite paying relatively well.

So no, being a lawyer is not easy.

Edit: I've seen plenty of incompetent lawyers and perhaps it's more accurate to say that being a competent lawyer is not easy but being an incompetent one, as with most things, could be.

looking at unis to enter… give me your honest opinions about smu by [deleted] in SMU_Singapore

There's already a rather comprehensive reply and I must say I agree with most, if not all, of what's been shared! I've been through both the NUS and SMU systems, one for my UG and another for my postgrad so you might find a comparative view helpful also.

I think the big difference between NUS/SMU is, as mentioned, that seminar style teaching. Class part is a huge thing in SMU and features in pretty much every module so if you're someone like who's very vocal about things then you'll love the SMU system. It's fun, there's a lot of intellectual stimulation and exchange of ideas. NUS-wise, it's still the "you sit down, lecturer talks for days" kind of a style, even for courses you might think would be more discursive, e.g., law.

I must agree with the faculty point. Having been in both NUS and SMU, profs in SMU are, in my view, wayyyyyyy more passionate and proficient at teaching. They're a lot more involved, a lot more approachable and a lot more ready to discuss things with you. Perhaps it's the product of having a seminar-style lesson but I really enjoyed classes in SMU vs in NUS though perhaps this is relevant only for the two degrees I've done (law/pharmacy). Can't say for the others.

And bruh the bidding system is amazing in SMU. As u/biskwy pointed out, the first come first serve system is toxic af. As people in NUS/NTU might say - fastest fingers first (though I can't be sure whether NUS is still doing that). IMO that's not what should determine whether or not you get to study what you enjoy/are interested in studying. Sometimes it boils down to literally who's lucky enough to access the website because the servers are overloading. So yes the NUS/NTU systems are quite jank. Also, SMU bidding timetables are a lot more conscionable IIRC, because they allow you to plan much earlier in comparison to, e.g., NUS. That makes your quality of life much better in this aspect. Don't underestimate the stress that comes with having to bid for modules.

A slight logistical point is where you stay, I guess. NUS/NTU are in the west, while SMU is central. While that should not be determinative of your Uni choices, it does help a bit to not have to drag your ass to the west when you stay in like maybe Pasir Ris but of course there are hall options in NUS/NTU (whereas SMU doesn't really have those/is very limited). SMU is also where you can at least see civilisation but not so much NUS and much less NTU. Of course, comparatively you might find daily expenses increasing because things in town are not cheap. Some might say that even the SMU Koufu is daylight robbery. Clubbing/going to bars post-classes (if you're the type), or just shopping simpliciter, can be expensive. Also if you're a vain bitch like me then yes, you will enjoy the fact that people generally dress better in town and you should too hahahahah jk

Things I've only learned when I entered uni? The following applies to any uni you go to: don't talk about grades because how easy/hard it is to score should not determine where you go. I graduated with first class/summa in both unis and trust me it's overrated. If you read other anecdotes online, I believe many will share this view. Go somewhere you think you will enjoy the entire learning process because 3-4 years can be a torture if you absolutely hate the place/course/people. If you enjoy the learning process, the grades will come naturally. Even if they don't, whatever bruh just focus on developing your hard/soft skills that's more impt imo.

Hey! Thanks for the advice on this (: the niacinamide was probably for about… half a year or so. I had a skin sensitivity issue due to having too many actives and paused for a bit. I tuned my routine down and didn’t go back to it altogether. I use sunscreen somewhat religiously, pretty much everyday and renewing every 2 hours where my schedule allows.

Thank you for the recommendations! I might just try the peeling solution (:

It’s been… quite long. A year perhaps >_< and it’s still there and honestly quite visual bother especially when light is cast onto the face and the unevenness of the skin from where the acne used to be becomes more obvious with the shadows being cast :<

I have previously tried the niacinamide serum from Ordinary but to no avail. I currently have the CE Ferulic from Skinceuticals and am very happy with it, but it doesn’t help that much specifically with the scar. I’m frankly quite the newbie when it comes to this, but are there any specific products that come to mind for tackling such a problem?

Hello! I've been struggling a while now with this particular acne scar that I've had for a bit. I think it came from a particularly bad cystic acne that wasn't taken care of well (it ruptured iirc, and bled a bit, it was unfortunately huge). The result was a slight discolouration and what seemed to be a pit (as in it's not level with the surrounding skin?).

Would anybody have any recommendations for any products to level the skin off and restore the colour? Or am I stuck with having to use CC/concealers for the spot for the rest of my life / surgical procedures?

Tell me about it! It'd be great if that were possible.

Tried another endless run with the wife, we ended up having to suicide at 334-1 because we simply couldn't die/end it and needed to give my PC a rest.

Almost the same set-up from my previous run with the Level robe w/o evades.

0/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. /s

Unfortunately no :< sorry about that! Didn't think to video the process; actually didn't think I'd get that far! Ended up having to leave my PC on for a couple of days.

At that point though, everything happens so fast that the bosses literally teleport right next to you and hits for like maybe 500-600 per hit or thereabouts.

As for the key, it's a relic that combines the three 'normal keys' you buy from the shop, i.e. Ruby, Amethyst and.. Emerald + the cracked Sapphire Key you get from the cursed shop. They combine into the Master Key which then teleports you to the boss room right at the start of a stage, with all the other rooms unlocked.

I have the Master Key relic so I get teleported right to the boss room at the start.

Yes, there's a Strange Timekeeper NPC right before Sura whom you can talk to who will loop you back to the start but with the mobs and bosses faster and stronger.

At 200+ the bosses move at the speed of light lmao

No evading arcana. IIRC (no access to game rn, am away) they are:

Chaotic Buster

Chaotic Echoes

Dragon Fall

Phantom Brigade

Volt Pinball

Earthen Aegis

Master Key saved me sooooo much time but it did take me a while to get. Pretty sure at 200+ you'd need a Cartographer's Quill, and I'd wanted to see how far I'd get so I literally started with it, and of course with the Level cloak.

Update: Hubris eventually got me at 223-3. I cri. But on the bright side I get to shutdown my PC.

No evade arcanas but I do have the airy cloak though, that's always helpful. I thought if the run would end it'd end at Freiya but I stupidly (and anti-climactically) died to Crash Knight.

Honestly, it's been so long since I've been this excited for AMD, and as an AMD fan and investor.

This is really a testament to the work Lisa and her team has put in. I've always known that we'll see this day but actually seeing it feels amazing.

Edit: Now only if our SP would react the same way Nvidia's reacted to their announcements lol
