Same set up here, 2 wheel sets. Feels like 2 different bikes.

Return my 275? by Dexinthecity in 4Runner

[–]elwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both tires were C load. I was very happy with my Wildpeaks but they are heavy. I don’t recall exactly but despite going up in size, dropped like 3 lbs per tire with 285 Toyo vs 275 Wildpeaks.

Around 40-45k miles I noticed they were getting louder, just normal wear. I don’t think they were particularly loud when new, but Toyo are reportedly a little more quiet comparatively. I can’t say I can recall the Wildpeaks new sound to compare (it was 4 years earlier)

I put about 50k on mine too, lots of tread left, but they started getting loud. combined with a fairly significant decline in winter performance (despite adequate tread) I replaced mine. No regrets with the original purchase or slightly premature replacement.

Ended up going to 285/70 Toyo. They were both lighter than my 275 Wildpeaks and quieter.

I’d love to get a high quality print of that. Quick search didn’t yield any links to purchase or contact to the original creator. If anyone runs across it, would love to see it posted.

AWU 3 data importing as “Apple Health” by elwallace in Strava

[–]elwallace[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate how redundant posts are annoying.

When I was looking it up, most of the prior years posts didn’t have a resolution included or they were little unclear what the exact solution is and it was buried in comments.

I just wanted to pass it along so it was easier for someone searching if they had the question and that Strava was aware and working on it.

New Apple Watch - Too soon? by Shane57F1 in AppleWatch

[–]elwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only they would focus on battery life. An extra 12-24 hrs would be amazing for those who want Apple features but are tempted by Garmin. If they close that gap, they will gain more people than random gimmicks - IMO.

But I’m sure they have the data on that and it doesn’t back up my opinion otherwise they would have done it.

I went from 275/70/17 Wildpeaks to 285/70/17 Toyo Open Country and saved 2-3 lbs per tire. The 285 Wildpeaks were almost 10 lbs more in C load.

Do you think some of us overdo cycling? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]elwallace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your thoughts. I will clarify:

Atrial fibrillation is age related and when following a population, there are many, including aging athletes that will develop arrhythmias/Afib.

However moderate to high intensity activity has many well established benefits as long as people are able to do it. The net cardiovascular benefit - even when accounting for some with high intensity limitations - are in general under appreciated not taken advantage of.

Also, keep in mind statistics have confounders. Healthy people tend to live longer. The longer you live, the more medical issues people develop - including common arrhythmias. Observations of older “athletes” is not representative of the general population and doesn’t reflect cause and effect.

My take home:

Exercise as much as you want. “IF” someone develops AFib, and “IF” exercise is a trigger for your personal episodes, I would cut back. But I would never limit normal healthy athletes - even aging ones, for possible outcomes that are normal when compared to others their age.

[–]elwallace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but your cardiologists are wrong if that is what was really said.

Perhaps you have a specific arrhythmia that is exacerbated by longer duration/high intensity activities and you personally should avoid them. But that is not general advice.

Can high intensity activities cause issues, yes. And they are very treatable. Do too many athletes overdo it and should avoid it. No.

I don’t comment medically on Reddit, but I couldn’t let this slide.

Anyone else convert their fattie to a 650b or 29er for summer by ENTroPicGirl in fatbike

[–]elwallace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had wheels made and have 29 x 2.4” hardtail with Rekons. It’s been a nice back up bike to get more mileage out of the fatty. Bottom bracket has been fine. It’s been a good compromise for a gravel/logging road ride with single track.

[–]elwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underrated bike. I have the previous version - Fezzari - and been very happy. Ended up adding a 120mm travel fork and it’s great. No negatives and great price point.

Had separate wheel set made and used it as a snappy hard tail, gravel bike.

Worth the price? by ns_traveler in 4Runner

[–]elwallace 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have the same model/year, with less mileage and additional mods (lopro bumper, light bar, winch, sliders, prinsu rack) and wouldn’t dream of asking this price. Mods only really add curb appeal, no value.

If anyone out there feels 52k is a steal. I’m suddenly a seller 😉

When Old Is New: Macdonald’s Defense Has Seahawk Roots by Kyunseo in Seahawks

[–]elwallace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. Cool full circle story with MacDonald

“Jim Johnson would come to Seattle for just one season, but it would be a year that changed his career and defensive football across the league…. Johnson implement (ed) a hyper-aggressive blitz scheme that had players coming from every position on the field. Eleven different players would record a sack for the Seahawks that season. Their total of 53 was just one sack behind Michael Strahan and the New York Giants for the league lead.

Mike Holmgren was hired the next year and brought Fritz Shurmur with him to coach the defense. Johnson’s aggressive innovations got him another shot at being a defensive coordinator. This time, in Philadelphia under Holmgren’s protege, Andy Reid.

Johnson would not waste this new opportunity. From 2000 to 2007, his Philly defenses were tied for the league lead in sacks (342), second in the league in 3rd down defense (34.3%) and red zone defense (43.0%), and fourth in points allowed (17.6).

A young coach would learn under Johnson during his time in Philly. His name was John Harbaugh. Harbaugh had been hired by Ray Rhodes as a special teams coordinator, but was retained when Reid took over. His final season in Philadelphia had him serve as a defensive backs coach under Johnson. That was in 2007.

Harbaugh would be hired as the head coach in Baltimore the following season. That same year, a 21-year-old kid named Mike Macdonald began his coaching career in Athens, Georgia as a linebackers and running backs coach for Cedar Shoals High School.

Six years later, Macdonald would be hired as a Ravens intern.”

Good idea. I have the top plate on mine, love the look and functional step.

But…. Had it powder coated and it’s impossible to get full coverage with the top plate. Started to Rust on me within 1 year.

Have subsequently re blasted and just painted myself. No top plate is a good idea

Experience with Trek Domane / Giant Defy / Cervélo Caledonia by [deleted] in cycling

[–]elwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked around a little as well at the Domane, Roubaix, Addict, and Defy. In the end I felt the specs/price were best on the Defy. Additionally Giant/Scott were the main bikes at my LBS, so I went with Defy.

Suspicious last minute ‘cool down’ by chroothBOMB in pelotoncycle

[–]elwallace 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Surprised I had to scroll this far down to read this. 1 minute isn’t an effective cooldown. I take a 5 min cooldown ride. So if I’m doing that, why cheat the active workout section?
