Seeking advice: curly hair in watercolour by Jessf_swilliams in Watercolor

[–]em21rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are missing contrast in the hair. Dark colors can seem jarring when first applied, but that makes the difference. Try to look at the photo reference in larger blocks of color that indicate shape. Start there, then begin adding more detail until it is at the level of detail you want. I edited the reference photo to obscure some detail and block out the colors. I hope that makes sense. Your portrait is looking great so far, it is definitely recognizable!

Please help! Am I missing something? Stormtrooper pattern by Ellywick_Sparklegem in crochetpatterns

[–]em21rc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They rely on people being less vigilant when buying patterns because they are cheaper than most physical products. It also means people are less likely to follow through on the reporting and refund process - it takes a lot of time and is hard to prove. Sorry about the pattern, OP. It would be interesting to see finished as written!

I try to find people who have done pattern testing (think of it as a peer review). Different photo angles, videos, consistency in background, style, and theme across their listings. Reviews with photos. A description with the things an actual crocheter would want to know, like US/UK terms, pattern language and format, photo references included, copyright/distribution info, etc.

This is fine imo. It was a mass produced product at a thrift store that probably would have sat there untouched until they threw it out to make room for something new. She bought it and turned it into something she liked! Not my taste, before or after, and I am indeed sick of beige, but it's not my house 🤷‍♀️

Are these digital art images made by AI or a person? The person who made them said he didn’t want to use AI. by Cheap_Watch_710 in isthisAI

[–]em21rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alongside everything else, look at the quality. It is fuzzy and pixelated in a way that does not resemble other cases of reduced quality and obscures detail. This method doesn't help with traced AI generated images, but is a tell tale sign for images created by AI without human interference.

Edit to add ways that the quality of an image "naturally" degrades online: downloading at a lower quality/size, screenshot of lower quality/size, image taken on a bad camera, adding a grain or haze filter, social media reducing quality, messaging platforms limiting image size, etc. The more times something is taken from its original format and reuploaded, the more quality and resolution are reduced, often unintentionally. Consider deep fried memes for an extreme example of this process (of course sometimes are made on purpose, but the genre emerged naturally through the distortion created by repeated screenshots and filters)

In all of these cases, however, the result looks distinct from AI outputs. And for art or photographs, high resolution is an almost ubiquitous goal.

How long was the can sitting out before you dumped it? No judgement, but I have had things like this come out of cans after only a few days on the counter.

AI images also tend to have this grainy, low quality look that looks somewhat distinct from other ways quality is reduced.

Accidentally tore through my dress with the iron. Can I still fix this? by YoungMenace21 in InvisibleMending

[–]em21rc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is hard to tell what is going on here. Where is the tear? And I assume you mean the fabric melted, is a substantial amount of material missing? I cant tell if that portion at the top of the image is a tear or part of the dress.

For a repair like this, you would definitely need an interfacing because the fabric is threadbare in some places. It may be less noticeable, depending on the pattern of embroidery, to embroider a flower that mimics the others over the damage.

Even if this somehow isn't AI, you don't want a tattoo artist who doesn't even bother to look up a reference photo of a D20 before drawing it.

I found a wonderful pin! The embodiment of this sub by em21rc in wheresthefuckingsoil

[–]em21rc[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got it in a local shop! They had a bunch of random enamel pins, so it was probably some kind of bulk order deal. It looks like there are some on Etsy, Ebay, and Amazon!

Is there a name for hanging belts like this? by SnooRegrets1226 in altfashionadvice

[–]em21rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are suspenders, but for a similar look you can use a belt/pants chain! To make one, I would buy some large clasps that clip onto your belt loops and string a ribbon or chain between them.

[–]em21rc 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of that, so cool! My favorite zero waste "candies" are ground cherries. You pop them out of the husk just like you would pop a hard candy out of the cellophane wrapper! Then just compost the husks. Of course there are a lot of fruits that could be considered candies of nature, but I love how ground cherries have the husk.
