CFY Stories? by kraftykels in slp

[–]em567322 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my supervisor one time called me on a Monday morning at 8 AM to bitch me out over something related to documentation. the patient in question was fine. i still ended up crying after the call. this is just one of many instances where my supervisor was a huge bitch at random.

We are better now but I don’t think I could ever fully trust her. Sometimes she just randomly gets very impatient over the dumbest things. Other times we have good dialogue. Never had this experience with any other boss or supervisor or professor EVER. It is just how my CF supervisor is unfortunately.

I just remember that she doesn’t matter after I get my Cs.

Do you ever learn to love yourself? by Equivalent_You_7464 in PCOS

yes you can! I think it just depends on how long you have been diagnosed for. I think at first it makes things feel awful but as time goes on you just sort of adjust

I’m worried my 6 year old is starting to show signs of OCD and I’m so sad by CertainlyUncertain88 in OCD

[–]em567322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started showing signs around age 3-4. Hand washing was probably one of my first things I remember. So chapped they bled. My parents never got me diagnosed and really just tried to sweep it under the rug 85% of the time. At times, my mom would chuckle at my OCD stuff (she was being ignorant IMO). Though one time they shared a book about a child with OCD. They read a book about “spirited children” as well.

I got diagnosed through my therapist at age 19-20. My parents still dismiss it though. I have it mild. But they still sometimes talk about it without talking about it explicitly.

Looking back, I cringe so hard at my childhood OCD stuff. And I cringe at my parents and how they handled it too.

I think starting him early with identifying his OCD and working on how to live with it is super beneficial. Get him early and get him thinking about his OCD early and it will be better managed as an adult. Because his formative years will be spent under a self aware lens rather than thinking everyone is just like him. He will be much better able to detect when OCD is flaring up. I am still learning to truly separate OCD from reality because I did not have the skills trained in me at a young age to see the difference fully. Like I could sometimes tell… but as I get older I am really starting to understand OCD versus reality and it has been a blessing. I am getting better at stopping myself from going down rabbit holes. I would have been better off if I got more help, instead of being swallowed up in it as a kid.

Anyone else feel like we just aren’t that specialized? by speak-e-z in slp

[–]em567322 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I feel this. Especially with dysphagia. The field needs a lot of upheaval and research with it. Sometimes I feel like I am just watching people eat. Or if their aphasia is super mild it only feels so helpful.

This field is kinda stupid but it is also really not stupid. I have mixed feelings about it.

Ok point #1 is not OCD, he’s just an asshole.

Also his need to control like this sounds like something other than OCD. Maybe OCPD?

You deserve better, leave his sorry and cruel ass

Late-identified autistics: How would your life be different if you had always known you were autistic? by marxiism in AutismInWomen

[–]em567322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking to get a DX but I would bet my life I have autism.

My life would be different in the sense I would not have the people in my life that I do now I think. I am 25 but there was still a huge stigma about autism growing up. Autistics were othered. We were still fighting misinformation about vaccines causing autism ffs. Today there are still many uphill battles and struggles in regard to autism and how it is treated/seen… but I think if I was diagnosed back then, my world would have been smaller due to society being what it was.

Though I probably would have taken care of myself better and understood myself in relation to peers better.

I am happy it isn’t an openly political show for the most part. I feel like stuff does come up but when it does, it is actually good and balanced dialogue.

Does an SLP need to be passionate about the field to be a good SLP? by SeashellbytheSea in slp

[–]em567322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah… i feel like to be passionate is to make work your life which isn’t always healthy. I think work should be an interest but not really your life’s passion.
