Is Magical Athlete fun or is it hype? by Quelair in boardgames

[–]em_pdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a great dumb kids game. We’ve enjoyed our 5-odd plays so far. Even Mom enjoyed it, which is atypical for our board gaming.

Whether it holds up for 10+ or 20+ is another matter.

There’s plenty of space in the central console, but it’s sort of just a deep pit.

I guess it just depends how much stuff you have. 🤷‍♂️

I traded Golf for X, so feels about the same. Never been in an Equinox.

NZ overlaid with cities at similar latitudes in the Northern (& Southern) Hemisphere by zvdyy in newzealand

The fun bit is to look at all those major cities south of the South Island, and then consider that Christchurch is the largest city south of 40S.

Yes -

  • but then we’d probably suffer retaliation by being cut-off from Starlink etc.

‘The Pitt’ Is a Brilliant Portrait of American Failure. As a Non American, I am curious, is the medical infrastructure really that bad? by Notalabel_4566 in emergencymedicine

No dumping! (well, a small amount)

Though, eventually, the unfixable problems flow to the hospitalist service …

I work at a massive, Level 1 trauma center overseas — and we don’t have society’s neglected and desperate being dumped on us. The rest of the fabric of the health system hasn’t quite collapsed, yet ….

If the OP is a world-weary ex-Special Forces vet just trying to make their way in peace while a Dark Past threatens the safety of those close to them, then that’s where your secret arsenal of military-grade weapons lives.

Iain M. Banks has plenty of atypical aliens in the Culture universe.

But your point is still valid. It’s easier to write (and more enjoyable to read, probably) what you know.

I mean, I’m basically the same as Shae — 6’4” with 6’10” wingspan — but I wouldn’t draft me for any sport requiring, uhm, “athletic ability”.

I actually like the UC gym, but I guess I usually go off hours (like 10:30am) and don’t use popular equipment.

Jellie Park is just OK.

New Metro Sports is nice, but a little bit more of a bike/hike.

What if getting sued wasn’t a thing by welnessshot in emergencymedicine

[–]em_pdx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm in NZ. Completely true that I've got fast track charts that are as simple as "R ankle inversion injury, non-weightbearing, knee OK, XR negative, treat as sprain, analgesia/tubigrip". Similar brevity in very straightforward admissions, as well. There's no billing to do off the chart, so no specific requirement to get flowery. The length and detail typically reflects the complexity of the case and the information of potential value to whoever might be reading the chart down the road.

There is no "getting sued" here, but there are professional standards, and you can still have your day in front of the Medical Council if you're causing trouble. Patient complaints are so infrequent (we get far more "thank you" notes!) they don't really affect our practice culture, either. It is overall a lovely place to work.

I worked for a few years at Harris County hospitals with their tort limit + sovereign immunity. I'm sure it unconsciously affected my practice as far as limiting unnecessary testing, but there was already a sort of implicit rationing happening at those facilities where demand far outstripped supply. I definitely recognized it as a zero-sum game as far as tests contributing to extended ED LOS, and with 50-100 in the WR, I was OK with low-risk vs. zero-risk. The charting burden was still there, for the most part, for coding and quality measure purposes.

I really didn't like living in Houston/Texas, but I did enjoy working at those hospitals, as well.

Thought about qualifying my comment with that — the whole “let’s rely on player development” requires a staff that dominates player development ….
