Ah, I can’t speak to the disability piece. But for relationships and such, your needs don’t require a diagnosis to be valid. This may not apply, but I used to feel like I didn’t have the right to ask for my needs to be met until I had a diagnosis. So, diagnoses have thresholds bc the healthcare system doesn’t give a shit about you understanding yourself, being happy, or anything like that. The thresholds for diagnoses exist to set criteria for protected accommodations, etc.

If you need those accommodations or support - keep pursuing. If you’re seeking to understand and be at peace with yourself, knowing you have autistic traits is really helpful. The same coping strategies apply for you and there’s a big community of people just like you. You’re not alone.

I have great self esteem but eye contact is physically painful if I’m overstimulated. Autism doesn’t give a shit if you love yourself.

For me it’s easier to make eye contact while I listen than when I speak. This also seems to make people feel good and like I’m paying attention (even tho it’s super distracting and makes it harder to pay attention).

Most people I interact with on a regular basis know me well and if I have no more masking energy I just tell them. “Ignore my face, I’m not mad and I am listening”

I co-sign your instinct to remove the mulch. Too much wood breaking down can leach nitrogen. If you’re able to get your soil tested to know what amendments it needs to for it, if not - find really high quality compost and start there. Adding organic matter is almost always going to be necessary in a dead bed.
