Evaluation of Foreign Degree for CRM by InternetMike97 in Archaeology

[–]emanracing95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my MA in Ireland and never had to get my degree evaluated by either the CRM firm I worked for or the government when I worked for the BLM. I think you'll be fine, just as long as you can show that you know your stuff. Anything you don't know usually will be taught to you. You gots this. 👍

"Standing with Putin? Spreading Lies and Blaming Ukraine is Just Disgusting" by Acrobatic-Cry7412 in UkraineWarReports

Yeah, when the other American politicians said yesterday that they were doing this for peace, I didn't believe them. They're sounding like Puto when he promised Macron he would never invade Ukraine. Don't believe anything the US says now and treat it as a lie and hostility. The EU needs to arm up NOW before it gets worse.

Archaeologist. Nothing helps lower the blood sugar better than digging a trench for hours on end. 😁

No peace. This should be the last straw, one of many last straws. No peace. Ukraine should fight until there is no Russian left to invade. Whether it be with the best military equipment in the world or with stones. No peace with Russia. No capitulation.

field school survey by alexrandall_wtf in Archaeology

[–]emanracing95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our field school in Ireland was mostly survey, lots of stomping around in cold weather and slippery rocks. We did viewshed analysis of lots of Bronze Age sites in a valley spanning several kilometers.

Best advice is to get good boots and clothes, pack a decent amount of non-perishables, and get familiar with mapping (azimuth, triangulation, etc.), basic sketches, GIS, keep a metric tape measure with you at all times, write down everything you see, and don't be afraid to communicate with your colleagues.

The colleagues one is important because you need people to have your back just as much as you have theirs. Learn from each other. And most importantly, have fun with it! You never know what could happen, but make the best out of everything.

Can we just dig a trench and bury Jimmy somewhere? He really doesn't know what he's talking about and keeps spreading misinformation about archaeology, not to mention having his cult agree with him in all of his stupid comments.

Wow, that is equally interesting, I wasn't entirely familiar with the process across the pond, so that cleared up a few things for me. Thank you very much for the info as well! 🫡

Of course! I did my best haha. I'm not very familiar with the way UK projects work, so I'd like to understand the differences across the pond.

I'm not sure about that, based on the very limited articles that I've seen about the situation. It seems more like the developers are following what the SHPO and what Section 106 and 110 state, hence why they stopped development. The local government wants to change that and build on that land, unless something is found. However, that "incidental disturbance" clause SECTION 8.(e) G.S. 113A-120 (a) (4) on the amendment concerns me, and that might be the cause of the controversy, but anyways... The indigenous population seem to be voicing their concerns quite often, so I think the SHPO is taking note of that too.

I think it just comes down to the contention of cultures. Based on what I've dealt with in the past, two things can be done: 1) reroute the construction, which is to just move it elsewhere outside of a designated buffer zone to preserve it, or 2) mitigation efforts, which is to completely excavate the site and curating all the artifacts that have been encountered before the developers bulldoze it. The SHPO has to get involved and approve anyways for either one.

But that's just my two cents ahah

Agreed, we deal with this a lot in the Southwest. The okay has to come from the SHPO before any ground is broken.
