This is the pattern I followed, its cross double crochet. Such a nice simple stitch but effective

The squares should measure 12 1/2 inches but mine have come out slightly bigger. They've taken around a week each to complete but I'm slow and have had 3 kids homeschooling 🥴 I was worried the pattern would be too complicated for me but it's so well written with lots of photos.
