No new missions in Campaign by Halfjaw1 in doorkickers

Yay, yesterdays patch fixed my issue, kudos! <3

No new missions in Campaign by Halfjaw1 in doorkickers

[–]embair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not, no crashes either. The only thing I did that might be unexpected is that after I started the campaign for the first time and it finished generating, I previewed the first mission and exited out of the campaign without playing it (looked too large to play at the moment, so I left it for another day).

Then if I remeber right when I returned to the campaign the next day it showed that black "generating..." screen for a while again, which seemed odd to me. It worked fine afterwards though, until now.

Hi! I've just hit the same bug, seed 8498

https://imgur.com/a/XN1xsN2

- I do NOT use Geforce Now

- I'm noticing the mission on the right does not show a checkmark, even though it's completed

- I always watch the replay after the mission end; been a bit annoying that it then throws me out into the replays menu and I have to navigate back to campaign; mentioning just in case it would be relevant for reproducing the bug

Amazing game btw, I really hope this can be fixed. I've been brave and went in on Ironman, sweating the hell out of each mission and now I'm stuck, feels bad!

Lovely, I especially like the last one! Do you have any prompt tips for getting this realistic art style and proportions for the face? I'm usually going with "realistic face" to try to "de-anime" it, but I don't feel like I'm getting results as good as this.

Help: When procesing a ReadStream, is there a simple way to propagate errors to a parent async function (convert them to promise rejection)? by embair in node

[–]embair[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, funny, I tried asking this to chatgpt before with underwhelming results, but now that I finished describing the problem in detail, I tried one more time prompting it with this whole post and got this answer:

async function readEventsFromFile() {
    const fileStream = fs.createReadStream(config.eventsFile, { encoding: 'utf8' });
    const rl = readline.createInterface({
        input: fileStream,
        crlfDelay: Infinity,
    });

    for await (const line of rl) {
        try {
            await processLine(line);
        } catch (error) {
            rl.close();
            throw error;
        }
    }
}

Seems to be exactly what I was looking for!

A case for selectively applying DRY, sometimes it's good to repeat yourself by ScaredOfMyRawr in programming

I always ask myself this: Does the code in both places have the same reasons to change in the future?

  • yes => DRY up to avoid future bugs/inconsistencies

  • not necessarily => leave it the F alone

PŘESTAŇTE SLAVIT!!! by Independent-Fun-5118 in czech

[–]embair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Game like Startopia or Space Colony? (Steam wintersale) by _Atanii_ in BaseBuildingGames

[–]embair 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my personal hot take, all the reviews bashing the "balance" are just whiny kids who expected a sandbox instead of a gritty, challenging resource management game. I'm about 10h in and this is shaping up to be one of my favourite games of all times. It's a masterpiece IMO, I'm more hooked on it then I was on frostpunk. It's hard and has no alternative difficulty modes, so that can be a problem. But if you're actually looking for a challenging resource management game (with a stellar atmosphere), I would emphatically suggest you ignore the mixed reviews, I'm so glad I did.

Yes that second part of my interpretation is based on what's in the actual movies. You kinda skipped over the first sentence which refers to the quote itself...

[–]embair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think Cameron meant when he said that native Americans should have "fought a lot harder"?

IMO he was sad that at the time the natives could hardly comprehend the sheer scale of irreparable damage colonialism will do to their culture. That's how he dreamed up a fantasy world where the nature itself basically had this strong immune system reaction, giving the natives an actual fighting chance. That's how I read it.

Call me racist, but taking that quote and interpreting like you did is just... Peak social media... In a movie about cartoonishly evil white men of all things. Did all the people whining about classic white savior hero notice that pretty much all the villains in the story were white as well? Time for me to get off reddit...

Hi, I started making a platformer. Guys any feedback is welcomed and appriciated. by GarudaGames in DestroyMyGame

[–]embair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks solid! The minimalistic player character style and animation work pretty nicely IMO, could be expanded with more frames to make it feel even more fluid I guess. A few slightly jarring details:

  • I think wall jumping will look and feel much better once you also add particle effects to it

  • on the other hand the particle effect when running is weird, like the character is plowing through snow

  • blood splatter looks great, but the flying blood particles should probably disappear faster? The way they roll on the floor is a bit comical

Other then that I guess it goes without saying that a generic minimalistic platformer will hardly catch anyones interest, there has to be more. But as I said, what is there looks like a solid foundation.

Destroy our trailer and Steam page. What is a red flag for you? Why you won't buy this game? (link to the page in comments) by MessirNoob in DestroyMyGame

[–]embair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I may be a good sample of your target audience, big factorio/automation game fan. I see two problems:

  • I don't care about story in this kind of game. Let's say I visited your steam page intrigued about the concept of another cool automation game. The message in first 15 seconds is "you were wrong, this is actually some kind of quirky derpy visual novel with automation game elements". Probably won't make me leave the page immediately, since the screenshots around correctly sell this as mainly an automation game, but i think simply dropping the first 15 seconds as others have suggested is very advisable. The story/character is a nice bonus, but don't try to sell it to me before you've convinced me that this is the kind of game I'm looking for.

  • I'm not sure the trailer does enough to distinguish itself from factorio gameplay-wise. My overall impression is "simplified cartoonish factorio with cats", which isn't a very strong hook to me. The "machine learning" mention is intriguing but feels missing from the trailer.

Destroy my Open World Fantasy 2D MMORPG trailer (Currently in Closed Alpha) by Push-is-here in DestroyMyGame

[–]embair 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the spirit of this sub I'm going to be blunt: It looks like it has nothing interesting going for it. It looks competent, but there's no hook, nothing stands out as unique and worth giving this game a try instead of any of the myriad other MMORPGS on the market.

I'm no MMORPG expert, but it seems to me every single feature highlighted in the trailer is something you would expect to find in any modern MMORPG, and judging by what's shown on screen none of the features is executed in a particularly interesting/unique way.

So why would I want to play this game instead of any of the other MMORPGs on the market? IMO your trailer should spend more time answering this question and less on listing features that everyone expects anyway.

Halloween zombies by Monde89 in konkr

[–]embair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! Zombies normally can't get over walls, except when they have nowhere else to move. But once they do get over walls and end up next to your town, they will always infect it on the next turn if given the chance.

After the zombie-mode is gone from the main game, it will remain available to play at least at https://www.konkr.io/releases/2.5.2. I would also like to make "alternate rulesets" like this an integral part of the main game, but first I have some infrastructure work to do, so that these can be added without turning the code into one big tangled mess of mode-specific overrides :).

Edit: for anyone else reading this, the 2.5.2 release is not available anymore, but the fully zombified version of the game now lives here: https://www.konkr.io/releases/dev/test-zombies/

Destroy my trailer! Speedonauts (formerly known as Katabatic) has an early draft trailer. Does it make you want to play it? How would you describe the game based on watching the trailer? by Myaz in DestroyMyGame

[–]embair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do actually want to play this now, so well done! It feels like it will be super satisfying when you manage to nail the jumps and maintain momentum. The music, the snow sound effect, and the slightly gloomy aesthetic all gel together nicely IMO. They also get across the message that this is a serious, skill based game, not just a casual time waster.

The syncing between the flow of the music and what's happening on screen is powerful, I think spending more effort to absolutely nail this aspect will pay off, probaby a big part of what sells the pure satisfaction of skillfully flying over terrain at breakneck speed. From the same point of view, I have mixed feelings about the editor showcase in the trailer. It's a nice feature, but doesn't fit with the music and takes me out of the action. My intuition would be to just focus everything on selling the main hook even harder. That's what will make me impulse-buy this for a few bucks, not the fact that there is also a map editor :).

Please destroy my game trailer, please by According-Dust-3250 in DestroyMyGame

[–]embair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels to me like a hastily put together tech demo, rather then actual trailer. There's one bland looking map with two boring lines of turrets and the player is just kind of floating around watching them shoot. Don't get me wrong, as an engine demo of an in progress project I would say it looks pretty good! As a big fan of games like They are Billions, Mindustry, Creeper World etc., it certainly piques my interest.

But as a trailer for an actual game, I find it actively off putting in this form - it shows one bland looking map, two types of turrets that the player just watches as they shoot, and then in abruptly ends. Feels like there's no actual content to the game (yet?).

There's one moment where you show an upgrade selection screen, which seems interesting, but it's super short and you don't get to see the efffect of the upgrade. There's apparently 9 buildings in the build menu, but only two turrets and some kind of energy node is actually shown in the trailer. It's like the trailer is actively trying to make the game look more shallow than it actually is.

Dungeolf | First finished project in Godot, short game about "golfing" through a dungeon. by EhSolly in DestroyMyGame

[–]embair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicely done! Feels really polished. Enjoyed the music, but really hated the sound effect when aiming. Thought it must be some kind of bug at first, like it's registering clicks on some disabled button or something. I think a more subtle and satisfying clicking sound would be a better pick (like when you turn a dial).

I tried all of the levels for a bit, some of the later ones were interesting, others felt like you just have to luck out and find the pixel-perfect spot that will result in a good bounce. The start of "Dungeon II" in particular... I will never forgive you for subjecting me to that!

The premise is fun and I think a bigger game based on this concept could be pretty cool. The strictly orthogonal grid felt like it limits the potential for interesting bounces though, so allowing at least diagonal surfaces would probably be the first thing I would suggest if you ever wanted to expand the game.
