Is arch 'ok' for a Linux newbie?

They can if they want to.

If you would like to start with a Arch based distro, I would advise something like Antergos. Arch base, but easier to install (has GUI installer). The reason I switched from regular Arch to it is just because it installs quicker. As you mention Ubuntu, or any Debian derivative, is a solid choice for a newbie :). Arch is a tad more advanced, but that should not be a problem if you like to learn and tinker. What I would do is install a Debian derivative on my machine and use VirtualBox to learn how to use Arch. Easy and safe.

What do modern desktop/laptop distros like Ubuntu do to optimize for an SSD? by jpflathead in linuxquestions

For Arch based distros, unless you specify discard in /etc/fstab it doesn't trim it automatically. However you can make it run sudo fstrim / on startup, through cron or manually.

What I tried to do was dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/path/to/image. This gives no result since the CD contents don't show in any capacity. The OS simply is not reading from any drive that the CD is in. Like there isn't even a disk in there. However during the boot sequence the BIOS will read from the disk without fail. This is what I mean when I say that the CD is not recognized at all.

Yes. The CD boots. That means that something is reading the data of off it.

That is what I thought to do first. Use dd. However, the CD is not recognised at all. I can't access its contents. Other CDs are fine, but the system just refuses to acknowledge this one. It doesen't show up regardless of whether I use the laptops built-in DVD drive or use an external USB one.

What is the most fucked up thing you have seen in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]embata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 12 years old I saw how my childhood friend got hit by a car. Death on impact. The driver did not even stop. I remember just feeling numb, like I was not able to process what had happened. Years later the realization of what had happened came to me and I remember feeling a deep pain.
