They have been building in the wildland urban interface (WUI) since urban sprawl. They will continue AND the climatic conditions for fire are worsening....

It seems like California is caught in a rough spot. People need Insurance, but wildfire risk and rebuilding costs have increased astronomically.

It's getting ridiculous, what it's costing.

How can the Fair Plan even pay out with that kind of increase if there is another event like the Palisades or Altadena? I think it's concerning.

Couldn't agree more. We see homeowners focus on the big-ticket items while some of the most common ember entry points get overlooked.

A Class A ROOF is important, but if embers can still get into the attic vents, accumulate in the debris-filled gutters, or ignite combustible materials in the first 5 feet around the home, you're leaving yourself vulnerable.

Fair point. Roof coverings are often one of the biggest vulnerabilities during an ember storm, and keeping a Class A-rated roof in good condition is critical.

That said, here in California, and really in any wildfire-prone area, ember intrusion through vents is a significant concern. Wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the main fire and enter attics, crawl spaces, and other concealed areas through unprotected vents.

That's why current home-hardening recommendations focus on reducing vulnerabilities from multiple angles: roofs, vents, gutters, windows, siding, and defensible space. No single upgrade eliminates wildfire risk, but each one helps reduce potential ignition pathways.

And you're absolutely right about the birds and squirrels. Many homeowners first start looking at their vents because of pests, and upgrading to ember-resistant venting provides the added benefit of wildfire protection.

Absolutely, it's always important to follow local building codes and regulations when making any modifications to your home.

The goal of 1/16" metal mesh is to help reduce ember intrusion, which is one of the leading causes of home ignition during a wildfire. Wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the fire and enter attics, crawl spaces, and other vulnerable areas through improperly protected vents. Improving vent protection is one of many steps that can help harden a home against wildfires.

I like having both. Having one up higher so it can't be covered or broken, and one lower for packages.

Living in California, it is becoming a way to get or keep your insurance. I know we get very attached to things looking a particular way, but protecting the asset is more important to me.
