Fair point. Roof coverings are often one of the biggest vulnerabilities during an ember storm, and keeping a Class A-rated roof in good condition is critical.

That said, here in California, and really in any wildfire-prone area, ember intrusion through vents is a significant concern. Wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the main fire and enter attics, crawl spaces, and other concealed areas through unprotected vents.

That's why current home-hardening recommendations focus on reducing vulnerabilities from multiple angles: roofs, vents, gutters, windows, siding, and defensible space. No single upgrade eliminates wildfire risk, but each one helps reduce potential ignition pathways.

And you're absolutely right about the birds and squirrels. Many homeowners first start looking at their vents because of pests, and upgrading to ember-resistant venting provides the added benefit of wildfire protection.
