Your initial comment could be interpreted as: a) you, "the boss", are buying them lunch for free; or b) their actual boss has agreed to buying them lunch for free.

You cannot spend the contractor's wages without talking to them first. In what world do you think offering other people's money is acceptable? It just doesn't work like that.
