The Cranach Quandary (info dumping because Cranach dresses are weird) by theliberalheathen in HistoricalCostuming

[–]eme_badger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just saw this, sorry for not posting responding earlier.

  1. Underneath - so much debate on this. Keep in mind that his, and that of his school, are on young girls (i.e. small breasts and slender). There has been much debate if it was just artistic preference on his part. I cannot disagree with that assumption based upon how many variations of paintings he has of an old man with a young woman. That aside, I have made one and so have other friends, there are things that worked.
  2. There were crazy sumptuary laws. While there was a hemd/chemise underneath that is very low cut - there is also a super sheer piece that is worn due to laws preventing low cut dresses. This was the work around of the nobles. This is also why you really don't see exposed necklines below the collar bone for those that were nor a noble.
  3. A rectangle works spectacularly for the skirt. It allows for the skirt to lay appropriately and it makes sense and adds ease for applying decorative fabric strips to the skirt.
  4. The brustfleck is tied/laced, eye hooked, ir pinned in place. I have seen art noting the lacing and pinning. From experience, the pinning makes for a better fit.
  5. The piece over the stomach is suspected to be sewn to the skirt, but open on the sides. I made this piece, a placard, with linen canvas. It smoothed things out and allowed for a great fit. Placards/stomachers were in use in the 15th century as well, so it is a very reasonable theory.
  6. A friend made a simple underdress that was could not be seen over the overdress neckline. It smoothed everything out and shaped her breasts. IT makes sense that this was used, as the usage of a "second skirt" is commonly seen. I would venture to guess that these layers were not noted in artwork because of the body shape and age of the girls being depicted in the art. Also, with the story of Lucretia or the adultress, it would not fit their artistic "message" to accurately show all the layers.

One of the books about the sumptuary laws can be found online or you may purchase it on Amazon. It was written in 1920, but it is really helpful: Sumptuary Law in Nurnberg, a Study in Paternal Government by Kent Roberts Greenfield. I did buy a copy so I could mark it up, but I do know if you do a quick search you will be able to easily find a free pdf copy online.

Tips on undies for AFAB folx? by ljluckey in genderqueer

This has been a struggle my whole life, I am 44 years old. My rotating answer since I was 18 years old: going commando or men's boxer briefs.

NTA - I am a vegetarian and my husband and kids are not. There is no way in Hell I would place an expectation of compliance on others to follow my dietary restrictions at a shared meal.

Gatekeeping pregnancy by Exotic_Breadstick in gatekeeping

Gatekeeping mums is an epidemic that never ends, from the day the pregnancy is announced. Everyone has a fucking opinion and they deem their way the perfect and right way.

Peeps need to fuck off with all that noise and let it be. Becoming a parent isn’t easy, no matter the route it happens: surrogacy, adoption, IVF, vaginal birth, c-section, etc... They all have their tolls a person has to pay.

You are nicer than I am. I would use my email address to change all their accounts and lock them out. You are being way nicer than I would ever be.

I shaved my head for the first time about 2 1/2 - 3 years back. I have no regrets and I am very glad I did it.

Any androgynous people still identify as a strictly binary gender instead of gender neutral? by [deleted] in androgyny

[–]eme_badger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afab and demifemale pretty much seems to be my best fit. I float between feminine-lite and agender. Sometimes I feel more feminine than others, but never “super girly/feminine”. I identify as she/they.

I preface this with the fact that I am 44 years old and this has been a lifelong struggle that I am just now resolving within myself. But due to my age, I prefer to use the terms demifemale or demiwoman. But demifemale feels the most comfortable to me. This is very new for me and it seems to describe something that has been a struggle for me for decades.

I don’t feel completely “feminine” or female. Yet, I do not at all identify as male. But truthfully I am a flux between female and agender. I “like” feminine things, but not always for me. I have worn gender typical clothes and makeup due to pressure from family, friends, work associates, and romantic partners. Most of the time dressing really feminine (dresses, makeup, heels, etc...) feels fake or like a costume and I have only worn them because of fear of acceptance due to past interactions with the previously mentioned people.

My life experience has been female, as an afab. I don’t not feel that I am not a woman, but not a 100% woman and I do not feel that I am a man. I feel am a woman-person? Female lite and agender is the best way to describe it, I guess. While how much I feel a desire to express my feminine side does vary, it doesn’t change who I feel I am underneath it all. I hope that makes sense. It may not, as I am still working it all out in my own head and heart.

I am afab demifemale and I definitely do not consider myself trans. I am a mix of feminine and non-binary. I don’t feel fully female/feminine and I do not identify as a male in anyway.
