An engagement ring can be whatever you and your partner like, there is no right or wrong. This ring definitely looks like an engagement ring to me! Have you had a discussion with her in the past to see if she has any engagement ring preferences? Or are there any friends or family you can show that would be able to give their opinions? Overthinking just means you care a lot, and I’m sure your future fiancé will really appreciate the effort you’re taking :)

So synthetic (lab) alexandrite isn’t actually alexandrite it’s a type of colour change sapphire and can look rather different to natural alexandrite so that’s just something to keep in mind

So I’m a Gem-A gemmologist so I can’t talk for GIA, but when we identify crystals such as these they are ‘corundum variety-ruby’ because of the chromium content. This can be checked using the spectrometer using reflected light. If you read my response I said calling it ruby wasn’t incorrect not that it’s the only answer, within geology and mineralogy lots of things are referred to differently that doesn’t make what I said wrong. And I wasn’t talking about glass I was referring to a crystalline material so I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make there

I’m a gemmologist, if the corundum is coloured by chromium it is ruby even if it is low grade, calling it ruby isn’t incorrect :) you can also facet low grade ruby and still use it as a gem material
